Gunsmithing Bedding an action in stock?

Is their any disadvantage to bedding the action to a stock without the barrel? I have not yet installed the barrel and do not plan on putting in a front barrel pad. I will use a threaded stud to hold the recoil lug in place. I thought I would try this because it would seem to be less of a hassle without the barrel. Any thoughts?

Why take the chance?

I don't do a barrel pad either. If the barrel is there you can verify it is centered in the barrel channel, NVG mount if present, and make sure it isn't going up or down hill.

I make a little clay snake and throw that in front of my lug.
