After reading and reading, I have begun my first bedding project. Problem is when checking pillar height I found that my magazine box is clamped tight between bottom metal and action. This was done with stock removed and using original trigger guard screws. Can I simply trim the mag. box so it has clearance? Or am I missing something else? Oh this is a stainless Rem 700 action.

Re: Bedding issue!

Does the rifle need to be bedded? How does it shoot? It may just need a skim coat. I am trying to visualize what you are talking about. Most of the jobs I have seen leave out the bottom metal when bedding, bolt the pillars to the action, then set it in place when the bedding has cured then bolt on the bottom metal.

Re: Bedding issue!

This is a Rem 7mag and best I can do is 3" or maybe 4" groups at 100yds. Terrible by my standards and past experience for this cal. What I am concerned about is doing all that work to bed stress free, then wrecking it because the magazine box is clamped tight between the bottom metal and action. In other words by tightening the trigger guard screws I will be distorting the action via contact of the three. As the pillars are not quite long enough for the magazine box to float between the action and bottom metal.

Re: Bedding issue!

Bed the action and bottom metal first. If the mag box is still too tall, trim until it fits properly.

Re: Bedding issue!

The mag box has to have clearance. I wouldn't be surprised to see your groups shrink alot by trimming your mag box. Just a very slight ammount of wiggle room is all it needs.

Re: Bedding issue!

Thanks for the input. Sounds like I am moving in the right direction. Wish I would have checked the clearance of the mag box before starting, just for my own info. Still wanted to try my hand at pillar bedding. Doing the cleanup work now, let ya know how things turn out.
Just got it back together, no problems. Boy do I feel dumb! The bedding created more space between the action and bottom metal...so the mag box is NOT an issue.

Did I mention this was my first bedding job. Can't wait to see how it shoots!
