Right now I'm only shooting at 200yds buy I want to stretch it out to 400yds. I'm looking into 3 different guns. Savage 110 tactical in either a .308 or .223 or CZ 527 varmint in .223. I'm leaning towards the .308 savage but if a get a .223 I can share ammo with my current SIG 556. I have a spare Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 for whichever I go with but what would your recommendations be. Either gun will be bought used to keep costs down. Let me say that I have been doing a research over all the listed guns but I just want to be sure I'm not throwing money away.

Re: Beginner long range shooter please help

if your just getting your feet wet, a .308 is the money round.
Reasons:
-readily available components
-low cost
-proven accuracy
-easy, trusted ballistics
-and.....*you will learn from it (most important)*

Savage 110 is a great choice, the Buckmaster scope unfortunately is not. Nikon quality begins at Monarchs. Bushnell quality starts with Elites. Higher up the ladder gets to Vortex PST and Leupolds.

Then again, if this is just a weekend plinking hobby, then a .223 might be the way to go. Its cheap, fun, and accurate when tuned up. hope this helps.

Re: Beginner long range shooter please help

I would say go with the .223 if you just plan on 400 as a max for target or small game. If you plan on going further out to say 800 or want to shoot larger game at further distance then go with the .308, just my opinion.

Re: Beginner long range shooter please help

go with the 223 in a bolt gun for now ! you should be able to find one fairly cheap and shoot the shit out of it! save and buy what you want later ! buy once cry once

.223 is my opinion for the stated reasons above. Keep your ammo costs down if you're just getting your feet wet. Less than 400 you are fine with .223. Beyond that you will need to look into .308 or another round. Don't underestimate the importance of good optics too. Have fun and good luck.

If 400yds is your max i would say go with the 308. It has awesome accuracy to that range, lots of good factory match ammo, and it is easy to load for if you get into handloading. The Savage is a good place to start with a Bushnell Elite 3200 Tactical. Affordable and repeatable. When i got started we used this combo out to 500yds no problem. The below combo should run you about $800-$900 total with base and rings and is definitely capable to 400yds. We picked up a used 10fp in a local store for $400. If you save some money and buy a used 10fp take the money you saved and do yourself a favor, invest in some reloading equipment if you haven't already.

Good snag. Check out the Bushnell Elite in the pick above. They sell them at Midway. Do yourself a favor and get the Mil/Mil adjustments NOT the Moa/Mil. Meaning 1/10th Mil turret adjustment and Mil reticle. They are about $200. For the price it will track very well and hold up nicely until you're ready to start upgrading your stuff. Don't get caught up in the BSA, or Barska crap. That Bushnell is the cheapest scope you can get that will track reliably. If you have more money look at the Vortex Viper lines.

Re: Beginner long range shooter please help

I agree that the .308 is the way to go.
The CZ is a fine rifle, they also make severaal HB models in .308.

The savage is an excellent choice, the CZ is certainly a more handsome rifle and they are excellent shooters as well.

The buckmaster is an excellent scope for the money, though limited in elevation adjustment.
