I am looking into getting a Target style 22. i am pretty much set on the Savage FVT. Are there any other repeater options out there for a reasonable price. I would like an Anshutz but the money is just not there. i own several savages. Not the prettiest things but they shoot out of their price range. Are there any other options out there close to the price of the savage or should I just go with the FVT and forget it?

Re: Beginner Target 22 options?

Are you looking to shoot open sights, or put a scope in it?

If you are planning on shooting the matches with a scope, then I'd look at either a CZ 452 American or Varmit.

For open sights, I'd look at a CZ 452 Lux or Special Military Trainer.

Re: Beginner Target 22 options?

according to the CMP rimfire sporter rulebook it has to be less than 7.5 pounds with a 3lb+ trigger. sporter style stock.

I want to shoot with the apeature/peep style adjustable sights like on the FVT, not open irons.

I got a good savage but it doesnt qualify. it weighs too much and has 10x scope(6x is max allowed). If i did go scope id really consider a CZ though.

Re: Beginner Target 22 options?

The link below has a couple of pics of the CZ 452 Ultra Lux that shot on an indoor four position league. It was a greeat rifle, but I felt that the 28.6 inch barrel was a hinderance for the offand portion of the matches. So I sold it and picked up a Specail Military Trainer instead. I think the shorter barrel will help with follow through for the next league.

In these pics I have a set of BRNO target sights on it. You don't need to rule out the CZ's just because they don't come from the factory with a set of apertures attached.

Re: Beginner Target 22 options?

I have a Biathlon 7-2 and it is probably the best out-of-box .22 target rifle I have ever shot. You can get them from $400-800 depending on what you need on it. The $400ish ones come with a rail and no irons, but I'm pretty sure you can pick up a set of peep sights and a barrel mount for it from mtguns for like $150-200 if I remember correctly and they mount right on with no smithing required.
