While loving the drink itself, Franklin was so contemptuous of out-of- control drunkards that in 1737 he published “The Drinker’s Dictionary,” a list of over 200 alternative terms for drunkenness he had overheard in taverns over the years, in his newspaper The Pennsylvania Gazette.
