Looking to go to and auto benelli from a pump for 3-gun comps. what can anyone say about the M1,2,3,or4 right out of the box. ive had an M1 and the recoil and unreliability useing low recoil ammo made me want to use it as an anchor, but now going into more matches and wanting to keep up with the speed of things looking back at an auto.

Re: Benelli

I have an M1 S90, I do not know about the other iterations / mods. In general: They are very fast. The old ones will allow for an extra round on the carrier, but newer M1s (and maybe M2s) can be modded to do the same. Check out Fed Regs 922R. The majority of the problems stem from the PG stock. There is a great photo tutorial floating around out there on how to trim your stock for a shorter LOP. They are a very simple design and easy to keep running. One of the best places to learn about them - particularly with respect to 3 gun is Brian Enos' forum.

Good luck

ETA - I while back I had an HK marked M1 that had problems with low dram / low base loads. The PG stock was an issue, but so was the buffer tube and spring. Benny Cooley is supposed to be a whiz with these and can do some mods to get them to run 100%. I was able to merely straighten my buffer tube a bit, polish the buffer and clip a couple of coils. My newer M1 seems to run low base just fine as long as it is lubed.

Re: Benelli

I have 2 stock Benellis a M1 and M2 no custom mods done that i run in 3 gun and have zero issues. It is the gun of choice for 3 gun for that reason.

Get the gun and goto Nordic Components web site order your self the 8 round extension tube, Barrel clamp, follower, and extended charging handle and put that all on in 20 minutes or less and you are 100% ready to go and done.

Re: Benelli

The m4 is about the fastest cycling shotgun I have ever handled, they fit nice, come up good and the recoil is more than manageable, even cycled with light wal mart shit loads

I am very surprised you had reliability issues with an M1. I run 7/8oz #9 shot reloads through my M1S90 for clays, about 100 rounds a week, and it never fails unless its an ammo failure, ie: no powder drop or a bad primer. It hasn't been cleaned in over 3000 rounds and still runs like a sewing machine.

Re: Benelli

I have an M1 and an M3- both function flawlessly. Don't have many rounds through my M1- it's a slug gun. Recoil on that was horrible- picked up the 11oz mercury filled recoil reducer for it. We'll see how it recoils next trip to the range

Re: Benelli

the only "issue" i have ever seen was the m4/m1014 cant do non-lethal rounds like bean bags or foam batons

used 1014s on both deployments and at 2 different departments

Re: Benelli

The newer model M4's can cycle the non-lethal, or low recoil rounds. The M1014 is a different beast. They have a few differences that you should check into if you are interested in both. The differences are listed on the Benelli forum. I have had both. The M4 feels better in my opinion. I put birdshot,00 Buck, low recoil 00 buck, self rifling slugs, and #4 buck through both. All cycled reliably. The thing fires fast as hell and the recoil is very manageable and does not feel like a kick in the face. I love my M4(11707) and will be keeping this one. It's fun to shoot and it's the easiest weapon to clean that I've ever had to clean. Sending you a PM.

Of the guys who can shoot whatever they want there is a strong showing of Benelli's (M1 and M2), followed by the FN/Winchester guns (SLP, SX2, SX3). There are still a few holdouts trying to keep remingtons running but that herd is getting pretty thin. On the horizon the Mossberg 930 and the upcoming Remington replacement are getting a lot of talk.

Re: Benelli

Have had an M1 and M2, just sold an M3, and ordered an M4. If I was going to go back to one for a dedicated 3 gun shotgun it would certainly be the m2, it seems to handle better and is a bit faster as far as cycle times go if I remember correctly. Double check me on that though, you should be able to find a long ass thread on the brian enos files about shotgun cycle times. The SX2 and SX3 are both faster by a decent bit but when I have personally seen a lot more reliability and functioning issues out of the sx2 sx3 than I have out of the benelli. YMMV. Looking forward to my new m4.
