I recently ordered a rifle from Marc at Spartan precision and now my step dad is very interested in getting a custom rifle for competitions and hunting with me. He read somewhere, (and when I mean somewhere, he has the old man power to find one page that says something that no one else knows about and google just laughs at you when you research it) that bergara is making many of the top barrels (don't know if he means outsourcing to bergara) in the US and that they now have a custom precision rifle line. So yesterday I was sitting around at work watching the hunting channel low and behold the guy had a bergara precision rifle. I looked them up and they seem relatively steep (4000-4500) considering what Spartan, GAP, and other good to go builders are charging for a build that is pretty standard here is the link http://www.bergarausa.com/bergara-custom-rifles.php . For some reason, again old man reasoning I guess he is hell bent to order one of these rifles. I talked him into waiting until I posed the question here to see if there is any positive or negative feedback. Here is the link to the website and appreciate ya'alls help. I tried to tell him to think about Spartan Precision or GAP but he wants something different if there aren't any negative things that come up from this post. Thanks in advance and I used search and the only things that came up were specific to barrels.

There is a TV show "shooting USA" on the outdoor channel that does a lot of advertising from them and has done a feature or two on them. I would check out their website. I don't think that it is a top contender. Maybe about an ER Shaw grade barrel.

Their base prices on the Tactical Rifles seem a bit high to start with. Many smiths can build a nice and accurate rifle. I would look at APA in Georgia as well, but I am at the point where i like to be heavily involved in what I want built. I would order a custom action, the exact barrel you want, a brake, ahigh end trigger, a heavy lug, the exact chassis you want, and have a qualified local smith put it all together. Starting with a Trued Action and a High Quality barrel is the majority of the battle, the rest is fit and finish.

There was also an add in the most recent AmericanRifleman. It seems they have been making barrels for a while, and are justrecently expanding into the tactical rifle market. Their barrels are buttonrifles, which is generally not the preferred method for best accuracy.

I know nothing about their quality but first saw them a few years ago making barrels for T/C contender’s and encore’s. Generally they were a little cheaper than T/C barrels... IMO any time the price get near custom cost, go custom and get exactly what you want but it may take longer to get... but again in my experience the wait is worth it.

The barrels are made in Spain, they are (to my knowledge) the only company that is machine honing after gun-drill and ream operations. The barrels are then button rifled.

I do not have any experience, even 2nd hand, with their rifles but if he's willing to spend that kind of money on a hunting/tactical rifle then I'd be looking at dealing with a custom builder from this forum instead of a company that's importing (at a minimum) the barrel and likely other components. Waiting for US Customs to release items can be a frustrating experience.

Ed Shilen supposedly helped them refine their technique in and acted as an advisor for manufacturing barrels. They are honed after reaming with vertical sunnen hones that are 'supposedly' very precise. I think they rate pretty high for a factory barrel in quality, but probably don't equal the customs.... That is JMO of course.

Thank you for your interest in Bergara Rifles. We believe in one gun, one gun builder. This attention to detail from the same person ensures the quality and accuracy that our customers demand. Each rifle that we build is guaranteed to shoot 1/2MOA or better @ 100 yards with factory ammo. Groups are measured center to center.

All of our rifles start with high quality components from the Bergara Action (built by Stiller), Bergara Barrel, McMillan stocks, Ashbury chassis, Brown Precision stocks, Oberndorf trigger guards, Badger trigger guards and DBM, Timney triggers, etc. We can build rifles with custom LOP, custom paint designs, trigger pull weights, etc. We are also set-up with every major optic manufacturer and can order a specific optic at a very competitive price.

Some of you would like to be involved with building a rifle and you can be. We want to build your rifle, not a rifle that we built for us and are offering to you. The image of the attached rifle started as a Long Range Hunter, but we changed the barrel from a #5 to a #6, added an APA Little Bastard brake, cut the barrel to 22”, and installed a Badger M5 DBM.

Our price might be higher than some, but it is also lower than some. The lead time on a rifle build is 90 days or less (on in stock parts). We offer a money back guarantee as well, it states: “The customer has 30 days, starting when the rifle is received, to shoot and test the rifle. If the customer is not satisfied for any reason, then return the rifle in as new condition and we will refund the purchase price of the rifle.”
