Berger 144 gr in a 6.5 CM

Great in the factory berger ammo from my creed. They must be a substantial improvement in bc because they're flatter and straighter than the 140 ammo is from what I've seen.

I've been shooting them in my 6.5 for a couple months and they shoot great! 41.5 gr of reloader 16, Lapua srp brass and have been great out to 1000 yards.

Just got finished loading up 40 rounds to test. H4350, Lapua brass, CCI450 primers is what I used. I'll report back as soon as I can get to the range.

The Berger factory stuff jumps a ton in my rifle, runs about 2880 fps, groups okay, but the nut behind the rifle wasn't doing his part last range trip. The 140 stuff hammers. It seems like the same load, just the slightly heavier bullet.

I am working on a load with them right now. Settled on 42 grain of h4350. Working on seating depth test later today. I have to jump these a mile in my Seekins 6.5 creed. Hopefully today I will find the right los to go with.

What sort of velocity are you getting with 42? I was hoping for closer to 2900, but am a bit short.

I tested from 0.010" off out to 0.060" off. They all shot well. I sorta went all in already with a 500 pcs box, but I'm going to pick up 3 or 4 more to finish out this barrel. They shoot well. Hoping to get out to the long range soon to really test them out.

I was getting right at 2700. I don’t think you will see 2900 unless you have a 30 inch barrel and some reloader 26.

Try jumping further. My widest seating depth node with the 140s was .065”-.090”!

I think my rifle just doesn’t like these bullet. I wanted it to like them. The bc is a great but I’m done with them and switching bullets. I have jumped these thing up to .125 and had them .0010 off the land. Still can get them to shoot. I have seen other people have great luck with them.

Thanks for the data point. I'm at 2830 with 41.9, but I wouldn't call it a node. There is a big fat velocity node at 2793 in my rifle. Planning to walk up the charge weight through another grain or so and see if I can find a higher one. If not, I'll be happy with that and load a bunch up.

Thanks also for the tip on loading further from the lands. I'll try that as well.

I have loaded over 250 now. I am not going to push any load development till I change out my barrel 26" Krieger (it has 2100 rounds thru it). I decided to just drop it in my current 147 ELDM load:

41.2 H4350
Lapua
CCI 450
2766 fps
6.2 SD

100 yard groups .5-.6 same as the Hornady. But my testing has shown the Berger groups much better at 1000 yards.

They do just fine with H4350 at 2800 0.050" jump in my rifle.

Preece Precision chambered a 26" Krieger M24 for my Tikka. I am not going to waste the barrel life by over testing. This is the 6th barrel I have started up. I just started with what worked for all the others:
144 Berger
41.5 gr H4350
Lapua case
CCI450

I picked up a case of factory loaded 144 Berger ammo and looking forward to trying it out. The box says 2830fps at the muzzle for that might be worth.

While every rifle I own seems to have a slow barrel (except my wife’s Ranch rifle in 300 Blackout) so I won’t make myself a laughing stock with velocities, but, the Burger 144’s are the tightest grouping bullet in my RPR. It seems to like bullets in the 143/144 range as it shoots the ELD-X within a tenth of an inch of the Bergers. So, I am happy.

Right now Berger bullets seem to be the only one’s available, so I stocked up. Down to my last 500 ELD-X’s so gonna hang on to them.

At Present, I have more 6.5 bullets on hand than i have barrel life left, but I have another 6.5CM rifle on the way so, gonna keep looking and buying.

Sorry all for quoting myself. I still get notifications for this thread and realized I never posted an actual long range report. I worked out from 400-1000 and the data lined up perfectly with Kestrel AB predicts. I did pick up a fair bit of velocity, I'm actually outside of my node now. I assume it's the lack of moisture in the air drying out the powder speeding it up a bit.

Anyway, still happy with this bullet. I bought enough to finish the barrel.

these 144gr and h-4350 did not shoot out of my gun like 1.5-2.5 inch groups 60 thousands off the lands from 41.5 till 43.4 every .2 grains. But 43.9 grs of 6.5 staball shoot 1/2 moa. its the same load I use for 140 gr elite hunters and get 1/2 out of them also

Rifle is an AI AT w/ 24” Proof SS barrel and Otter Creek Hydrogen L

Ammo is Berger factory 144gr LRHT

This is going to be the main load for this gun for a while, I’m sure of that.
