Bergers in 308

Re: Bergers in 308

The chamber in a factory 700P is very long, Bergers tend to like up close or touching the lands. I shoot Berger 185 VLD's but have a custom Palma chamber cut just for them. I am .004 off the lands. Factory ammo would be into the lands .006=/-, if I shot any.

Take your time and really work testing OAL with Berger loads, keep at least the diameter of the bullet (.308) inside the case however and adjust neck tension accordingly. And in a factory chamber, if you have a detachable mag forget about mag length.

Re: Bergers in 308

No 168's, but the 185 BT LR shoots like house-of-fire loaded to mag length (2.830). They are now replacing my 175 SMK for pretty much everything. I shoot'em with 47.8-48.0 grns of Alliants 2000-MR, charge weight depends on time of year.

I use VLD's in several calibers....this will help you with finding the right seat depth. http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2009/03/berger-tips-for-loading-vld-bullets/

Contrary to popular belief they do not have to be close to the lands to shoot well. In one rifle I am jumping .123" and it shoots very good. With the above info from Berger you can figure out what jump the bullet likes in your rifle.
