Scope will be used on ar10t .308. For paper punching and hunting.

The $300-$400 range is for a used scope.

What is the best bang for the buck in this price range?

Wanting a tactical type scope.

X2, I am very happy with my vortex viper, I would not hesitate to buy again. So far I have only shot it to 500 yards but The turrets are accurate and repeatable.

Check out the Mark AR from Leupold. Same specs as teh Gold rings, so you're getting a quality American made scope. This is not just designed for a 223 platform either. This scope would work very well on any AR platform. The Mark AR 4-12x40 should give you what you need for shots from 100 yards out to 600 plus depending on your skill. The T2 turrets are very solid and will alwasy let you shoot a box. Its just over the budget, but if you buy right you buy once.

Honestly the best value for $400 is putting $400 towards a used scope in the $5-600 range. You can pick up a used Super Sniper 3-9x42, Bushnell Elite, or a Leupold Vari-x iii Tactical. These are all head and shoulders above anything you will find for $3-400.

Another vote for Bushnell. A brand new Bushnell 4200 with .1 mil turrets, illumination, and FFP sells for around $500 (if you can actually find them). Might be able to find a used one cheaper or for around the same price.

Picked exactly that up recently for $530 - 3-12, mil reticle, mil turrets, illumination, and FFP.

I currently use the weaver on my 308. Solid scope, lowlight did a review on it awhile back too i think. Don't think you can beat it for the price. If your doing any hunting I would stay away from the fixed powers...just my personal preference.
