I'm not interested in accuracy, since I know all the top barrel companies are going to product great accuracy. What I'm wondering is there a barrel manufacture that holds up better to "barrel burners" and will allow more rounds down the tube before heading south. I'm looking to build a 6.5x284 or 7mm short action (wsm or rsaum) and know they tend to go south at about 1k. Looking to add some life, other than shooting habits.

Re: Best Barrel for Barrel Burners

Some people feel that button rifled barrels may last a little longer due to the rifling process. Stress is induced to 'iron' in the rifling with the button then twice stress relieved after the process. That is the way Benchmark does it. The cut rifled guys may argue the opposite way.

Honestly if you were after better barrel life i would buy a barrel from your favorite manufacturer, have it threaded and chambered, break it in, and then send it off to be Nitrided/Melonited at MMI-Trutec or through Mark Lammers at Losok Custom Arms.

Try a search for "Melonite" here on the hide. Alot of good info. 50-100% barrel life increase.

Re: Best Barrel for Barrel Burners

Look into using the Tubbs TMS rounds as well. They help keep the throat smooth and accurate life longer.

Thanks for your input, something else to research. Only issue is cost. It cost about the same as a new barrel, so wouldn't it almost be just as cost effective to have the gun re-barreled. What's your input on brands? Any last longer? Does 5r groove last longer?

Re: Best Barrel for Barrel Burners

The cost of ammo is going to eclipse the cost of the barrel. If you don't want to be replacing barrels all the time, don't load as hot. And I have never ever seen a post or a thread stating as fact that X barrel last longer then Y barrel. To even prove that, you would have to have 2 exact guns shot at the same schedule with the same load... it's not going to happen.

Check out Lothar Walther, they claim their proprietary barrel steel is very hard. Most everyone else uses 416R for their stainless barrels, maybe check to see if anyone uses 410.

Of course you are interested in ACCURACY- when a barrel "goes south" its ACCURACY drops off. It'll still go bang long after the throat is WAY eroded.

You can help a barrel by avoiding long rapid fire strings-but if its a comp rifle and you are truly serious about shooting well at matches-its just another consumable item.

If its not a comp rifle-1K rounds is WAY too conservative. Use slower powders, try boron nitrided bullets or moly if you want to deal with its short comings as far as cleaning goes. You'd see alot more than 1000 rounds.

Re: Best Barrel for Barrel Burners

I just had 2 barrels hardened by NITROCARBURIZING, results will not be know by me for years but others have been using it for years and claiming success.
The process will surface harden certain alloys to that comparable with a file.
Do some rearch on the net and figure out what alloy barrel you have as the process is not for all alloys.
I did it as it looks promising and I though the cost was very reasonable.
Will supply contact info if desired, just email me.

Re: Best Barrel for Barrel Burners

You could try a chromemoly barrel, from Shilen or Lothar Walther (all I can think of at the moment). Then get it nitrided AND shoot some moly or coated bullets, that HbN stuff or whatever the hell it's called. You will probably have to lap the barrel yourself though but if it lasts twice as long it's worth it.

Re: Best Barrel for Barrel Burners

Isn't considerably longer barrel throat life ABS Precision Barrels claim to fame because a lot more heat is dissipated away from the throat area of the barrel with their carbon wrapped barrel design.
Is there anyone out there that has shot a lot of rounds through one of these barrels that can attest to this?
