Getting ready to do a build on my 700P in .308 (yea I know .338 lapua or any of the 6.5's would be sexier but I am a fan of the .308). Have been researching and looking at different heavy barrels and have come up with a couple of questions.

Not sure how many times this has been solved on here, but a few simple questions, (1)cut rifling or button rifiling barrel, I think I have settle on a 1 : 10 twist, finally (2.) stainless (416 SS) or chrome moly? Any suggestions?

Re: Best barrel

Yep, cut rifled by Bartlein, Krieger, Brux, or Rock Creek.

The gun plumber is probbly more important than the brand of barrel you get - a good smith makes all the difference!!

The plumber is what makes it. As long as you go with a top tier brand it won't matter. I've seen cut rifled barrels shoot .1's and .2's and I've seen button rifled barrels shoot the same. I prefer cut rifled. If I had to use button rifled I would use a Schneider or Lilja. Bad ass button rifled barrels for sure.

Re: Best barrel

Both, cut or button yield very good results. Stainless would be my choice if I'm coating it. Your choice of caliber is just fine, same as I would do if I only had one rifle. My personal preference is cut rifling, and I like Kreiger or Bartlien on my rifles, but have built on Sheilen, and Broughton for customers with excellent results.

I do agree with the above on gunsmith choice. There are a lot of very good smiths right here on the Hide. My personal choices would be Mark Gordon or William Roscoe based on conversations I've had with both of these gentlemen.

Best of luck on your choices.

Re: Best barrel

button rifled barrels don't scare me. i actually prefer broughton barrels.

when it comes down to it, any of the popular manufactures will produce a quality barrel.

Re: Best barrel

The best barrel is from a major Manufacture that " YOU CAN GET "

Most gunsmiths have relationships with certain barrel companies. They support and push what they can get.

Most barrel company's will stand behind there barrels. They do have people building them and there has been bad barrels made by " EVERY " barrel co. out there..
