Am currently building a upper for my AR. now selecting a barrel prob a 16in light. i dont know what twist would be best for shooting a heavy bullet 60+ grain. i do have a 20in 1-9 bull that i shoot 68 grains through pretty well. just hoping for a little direction or somewhere to get info

Re: Best bullet grain for twist

I think I read this somewhere as a general recommendation. 1:9 for 40-60 grain. 1:8 for 55-75 and 1:7 for 65 and up. Those numbers might be off by a few grains but I think that's close if I remember right

Re: Best bullet grain for twist

i like 1-9 for 55gr and less and my 1-7 for 68gr and up. i also use 55gr ammo out of my 1-7 and dont have any problems what so ever

Re: Best bullet grain for twist

1-8 will stabilize anything that can be mag fed.

most 1-9 will stabilize the 75-77 grain pills, but barely.

1-8 and your safe, some 1-7 barrels don't shoot the 55 and lighter bullets well (spinning too fast)
