I want to get to one load for range work (not serious target) and deer hunting. I am shooting a 308 and have loads that work for 155, 168, 180 and 200 gr. Of these I get good velocity and accuracy on all loads except 168.

So for range work I could use any. For hunting I will be shooting deer from small to medium (red). I want to have lots of whack but am not sure whether a larger bullet has a greater terminal effect than a lighter one and how that plays with a stronger bullet blowing clean through.

Apologies for a vague question

If you are hunting and long range shooting I would suggest looking at the 178 grain Hornady AMAX if you can get them. Solid long range projectile, good BC, and the polymer tip will give good expansion.

I would choose one of the Berger Hunting VLDs. I would think those would be perfect, if you can afford them.

Here is a good article about the utility of the Berger Hunting VLDs.

A red stag is even taken in the article with a .257 Roberts and the 115g VLD. (Considered too light by many.)
