Are there any other options to Tiptons that work better for an all around vice?

I like to buy old Wilton bullet vises but it depends on how you want to clamp things.

Wilton is a real work vice different from the Tipton.

I have a Tipton and it's great for pulling out of its storage area throwing it on the bench and working on the rifle.

Mounting a scope or cleaning a rifle it's great.

I'm happy with mine and the $100 bucks or less it cost.

For real vice work though, something that requires force, get a Wilton

Best gun vide is an old versa vise.

Better to make a soft attachment that won't mess up wood or metal for a bench vise.

I guess thats part of my question, ive seen some soft jaws that attach with magnets. Is there better options?

That'll do the job. I just bought some rubber ones that my local hardware store had.
