I guess I should have stated no muffs. Less bulk, something easy to pop in and out. Suppressors are illegal here.

Keep in mind that ear plugs don't provide he same quality of hearing protection as muffs. Sound can still be transmitted to the inner ear through vibrations of the cochlea, so hearing damage can still occur if you wear just ear buds.
Personally I wear ear muffs, usually doubled up with ear plugs, especially if I'm shooting inside or underneath a covering. My choice is the MSA Supreme-X's as someone else recommended. Works great and is very tolerant of the adverse conditions. Microphones work good, absolutely no problem hearing noise the mic's pick up, having a conversation or listening in on a conversation shooting bay's away is a breeze if you are so inclined to creep.
If it's for hunting where you will only be shooting a shot or two, something like a set of ear plugs is fine. But for any sort of volume shooting, I would definitely recommend muffs.

I use custom ear plugs, you can get them from a hearing aid store. The first pair lasted 8 years am on my second pair and had them for 5. They are the most comfortable as I work around gas turbines and will wear them for hours at a time. They are a lot better than foam plugs and you can get them with a cord.
Another vote for a suppressor and in ears. Though I do still double plug at the indoor range because not everyone has them. For those trips, I have some howard light impact sports that are about 10 years old. Still work great, though.
I will say, I tried the $150 Walker Ear Buds. Things were not great. I didn't even bother installing the hearing aid battery. Fit sucked so they almost instantly went back into the box.
The advertised 80 hour battery life is continuous. So you have to put new battery in every weekend.

What would you say the limit is with those? You shooting braked rifles with them?
I shoot rifle pistol and shotgun with these, and if I was still fixing 737's I would wear them at work, while ROing and shooting a USPSA match open guns were bearable, next USPSA match I shoot I'll double up with muffs when the open shooters are shooting
