Best material for tactical bolt knob?

Re: Best material for tactical bolt knob?

I've got 6061 and 7075 aluminum, 1018 steel, 1045 steel, 304 stainless, and a bit of titanium laying around to play with. I'm thinking parkerized steel. It's going on a normal steel remington 700 bolt but I don't see why that would really matter.

Any reason to go with stainless or aluminum and not regular steel? Just curious for my own education. I've got 7075 so I'll try that out first, it just seems like it would get dinged up easier than carbon or stainless steel would.

Re: Best material for tactical bolt knob?

If you have carbon steel use it. It's harder than stainless and when painted you wont be able to tell the difference. Your stock will get dinged up before anything else so I wouldn’t sweat it.

Re: Best material for tactical bolt knob?

I make most of mine out of 17-4 or 303/304 Stainless. On some occasions I'll use 1218 or some other type of CM steel. If you want reduced weight, the different grades of aluminum are fine but I don't like to thread aluminum and torque it down without a Heli-Coil....

Tungsten...

...or carbon steel.

Re: Best material for tactical bolt knob?

Pure graphite, not fiber reinforced.

It feels dry if your hands are sweaty, it never gets hot or cold to the touch, the open pore type structure of it gives great *traction* for non-slip actuation.

It will chip, but everything else will chip or dink too.

Re: Best material for tactical bolt knob?

Didn't get any of the unobtanium, it sold out just as I was placing the order. EVERY time I order it that happens...

I did make some pretty sweet knobs out of some 1" 11L17 I had laying around, I'll post a picture when I get my camera working.

PLC prints, actually a PLC recall notice explaining how to not lock it up and cause mayhem.
