Just wondering what a good mildot scope is. dont know much about scopes. have a rem 700 308. Looking for a scope under a grand. Deer deer hunting and target shooting up to 1000 yards

Deer hunting and target shooting to 1,000 yards? You sure can pick two totally different shooting styles. New rules against bashing new guys restrict me from several smart ass comments at this point so just check out the for sale section.

Don't know this guy from adam but this was the first one for a grand.

Re: Best mildot scope?

For the price, I'd say a vortex viper PST.
Yes deer and LR can be worlds apart, but you can set up a rig to do both fairly well.

Only deer rifle kill I have was a rem700 sps with a PST. Not my first choice for a LR rig, but it will ring some steel at extended ranges and is a great starter rig in my opinion.

That's good stuff.

Re: Best mildot scope?

I know i have not been bashed yet, i was just stating the yardage so i can get a good scope for the scenario. No bragging intended just want to know what is best for my gun and the yardage i know absolutely nothing about scopes just ballistics

You're a good sport. You'll need some good turrets for reliable elevation/windage adjust if you really want to shoot accurately at LR. The mil dots will work well for your deer at 300-400 yards. Your dad's experience can really help you on this project - make sure you spend some time with him on the topic of picking out your scope.

Is this a better way to state your priorities: Deer hunting as first priority, with enough LR features and optics quality to clang some iron out to 1,000+/- for fun? Would also be good to let everyone know the max you want to pay. If you can spend just under a grand, you can get a good scope for what you are after. At half that price there are some good used options and a few new, and at twice that price you can get into world class optics new.

The link Graham sent you is a really great place to start learning. If you understand all that is in there then read the posts, do some search and then ask more questions you will know exactly what you want and need. You have come to the right place.

Check out Ben-Sons on the Vortex PST ==> PST 4-16 ($700 new) and 6-24 ($950 new). Used will be less - you can look for them on the used postings but make sure you really know what you are buying and what shape it's in / what it's been through.

Try these additional sources of good information:

Riflescopes: Under $600
