Going to order an AW 308 tomorrow. What is the best scope mount? Stay with factory AI? Or?
What cant?
Will probably be mounting a SB 4-16x42.
Thanks
James

Re: Best Mount for AI AW?

4-16x42 will require 28 MOA

It will not zero at 100 with a 45 MOA.

I take it you are getting the pic rail mount, not the dovetail?

The standard AI mount is perfectly fine. Call Randy at Mile High.

Good luck

Re: Best Mount for AI AW?

I have an AW in 308 with the permanently mounted Picatinny rail that I am using the 34 mm Spuhr mount- it's a great mount, I like it better than the AI mount but it costs a lot more. The Spuhr mount doesn't obstruct the shooter's view of the turrets as much and it has a bubble level built in, but it's very expensive. The AI mount will do just fine for about 1/3rd of the cost. My Spuhr mount is a 20.6 moa cant and my AI mount is the 28 MOA mount. I am also running this rifle with the S&B 4-16x42 scope and it's an awesome combo.

Yes there is a lot of space between the scope objective and the barrel but look at how low my cheekpiece is, you really couldn't mount the scope much lower. With the scope zeroed at 100 yds. There's plenty of elevation to get out to the 308's maximum effective range.

Re: Best Mount for AI AW?

4-16 SuB is really designed for 18-22 moa and there is really not any reason to mount it on a 30 moa base.
It will work on a 30 moa mount but there is not much reason to have it overtilted.

I would recomend you to go for a mount that grabs directly to the reciver, can't see any reason to put extra parts in betwen.
It can't get more right than machined directly.....

So my recomendation would be either AI mount or ours.
As far as I know of there is no others that grabs direcetly to the reciver.

Here is the mount we recently delivered to Swedish armed forces for thier refurbishment on PSG90 (AIAW 7,62).
Specially for the Swedish army delivered with one box containing 4 different picatinny rails and one simrad rail.

I would not go for a detachable mount on a dedicated longrange/sniper rifle, that is actually working against the idea of the sniper rifle itself.....

Re: Best Mount for AI AW?

With my aw308 and pm ii 5-25 I have 93 moa of total elevation...would an AI 45 moa mount be appropriate?

If not, what IS a good scope/rifle combo for a 45 moa mount?

I currently have the combo set for a 100 yd zero in badger rings with no forward angle.

+1 to that.
Get the 18 MOA version. It can be had in either 30 or 34MM.

Re: Best Mount for AI AW?

I would recomend you to not go for 45moa on 308 as the image qualiy om 100-300 meter will suffer. The picture will get oval.
45 Moa is the choise when shooting a lot longer and is really only intersting on ranges above 1200-1400 meters.

The AI mount is certainly a good mount, but its not a mounting system.
Its a plain good scopeholder.

A mounting system that is our solution or for example GDI where loads of various other mounting possibilitys is offered. Like for red dots, aci, lasers and NV and thermal. Therefor is not AI mount a mounting system.
Here is shown what our mounting system offers, and as far as I am avare of, no other manufacturer offers anything like it.

Do AI scope mounts come in different hights, my problem is I have an Aw dovetail. I was running AI mount and it looked great with s&b 5-25 and the s&b 3-20 even the s&b 4-16 but it looks so funky with a kahles k312. Looks ridiculous. Pic incoming.

You'll be happy either either choice I believe. I personally have run both (AI's mount and the Spuhr's) in both AI Dovetail and Picatinny.

Things to note: With Spuhr, the rings are very wide so you cannot mount a scope-tube based bubble level (such as the Flatline Ops). Not a problem since the Spuhr has a bubble level in the base, but I do prefer a tube mounted bubble myself.

Also, if you are running Dovetail and want to mount an ACI/ADI you won't have any options for that with the AI mount unless you buy the Flatline Ops level and also their "Strongarm" product to hold an ACI off to the side. Spuhr makes an ADI/ACI mounting plate that attaches right to the base. There are other companies out there that do this as well (Flatline Ops is not the only one, but the are the best option I feel).

I am currently running Spuhr with the ACI plates on all of my AI's and couldn't be more pleased with the setup.

As far as cant in the base... probably 20 MOA would be plenty for your optic choice. I run the 45 MOA on my AW308 with a S&B 5-25x56 with no issues and a 100 yard zero.... granted this S&B 5-25 is designed around a 45 MOA cant also.
