Rifle Scopes Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

I thought the Eotech was great in front of my PVS14. I switched to Aimpoint Micro T1 and I find the housing of the optic is more in the way than the bigger cleaner window of the Eotech. However, I prefer the T1 in all ways other than with NV mounted behind it. Battery life, knob for operation, weight/size, etc.

I agree 100%. I am a T1 fan usually but with NV the Eotech is much better. I have 20/20 vision with no astigmatism and with Aimpoint the dot particulalry in NV is not crisp dot and looks more like a / forward slash. Also the open housing of the Eotech lines up better and gives you a more open view compared to Aimpoint.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

how about using a proper scope instead of those tactical things.

i used mine behind a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x50 for night hunting.

This way you dont have scope housing in the field of view

Tactical things?

Magnified scopes do not work BEHIND the PVS14. You get POI shifts with different magnification. You can put scopes in FRONT of NV device such as a PVS22 but not a PVS14.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

Where did i say about putting a PVS14 in front of a scope?

i said putting it behind a rifle scope.

I have seen the PVS14 used behing these AR15 type scopes such as the Eotech but they never line up well enough. AR15.com has some photos of them being used.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

We use the PVS-14 in front of the M68 (Aimpoint). I actualy never use them in that way since it is better to just use the PEQ2 or Vital.

The bottom line is that you can not put a PVS14 behind a rifle scope. First of all, do you know what your eye relief would be like. Your eye will be like 7" behind the actual scope itself. When you want to use your scope during day time you will have to remount your day time scope as well. Besides that when the PVS14 is used behind the rifle scope it will affect point of impact. This is why there is the PVS22 which is to mount in FRONT of your scope. This way it does not affect POI and when you want to use your rifle during day time, all you do is remove your PVS22 and dont have to touch your rifle scope itself. Hope this makes sense.

dude, No offence but u have no idea what your talking about.

I have used a PVS14 behind a rifle scope for over a year and it works brilliant. no poi shift at all. the eye relief is a small issue that can be fixed with forward mounting the scope a little and using a butt extender.

i have hunted with the PVS14 behind my day scope using a universal adapter VERY succesfully.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

FX1 what type of daytime scope are you using? I am looking at getting an us night vision pvs14 what kind are you using? I have a s&b 5-25 that will be in front. It will be autogated and runs 3850 what do u think about that? Want to
Make sure it will work before I spend that much. Kinda worried about eye relief

Perhaps you could post a pic of your set up? It stands to reason that mounting a magnified optic in front of your NV unit would make it hard to use when the NV unit is removed. Not an issue when using NV with an unmagnified red dot like EOTech or Aimpoint etc.

The conventional set up is to mount the NV unit in front of the magnified optic so it can be removed/installed w/o impacting eye relief or cheek weld on the rifle.

Hope to see a pic of your rig.

Here is a link to my PVS14 Album.

You can see my IR laser that i used to top up the lost light through the day scope, the laser is not an aimer but a nice illuminator.

Some scopes work better than others a S&B will work nicely if you have one but even cheap scopes work just as well.

Notice how my scope is a little more forward than normal so i can use both day and night.

This would work better on a AR15 platform with a butt that you can extend out.

There are a few sacrifices to be made when using this setup but then again your not spending $11,000 on a PVS27.

Its also not recommended to be used on anything above .223 unless you have a big halo or weapons grade tube.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

Fx1 what would you say is your effective range with your setup? I am debating on whether to spend the might as well say 4400 with the adapter or go ahead and get the pvs 24? I don't want to regret anything so sorry for all the questions.
The eye relief is looking like it could be a problem.

I dont know how far you can shoot tbh but its going to be limited by your skill.

how far do you need to shoot?

i think some people dont understand the limitations of shooting by night. there is only so much resolution to play with any set up

i shoot 300 easy with both d760 or pvs14

A lot of guys run PVS14's behind the Mk4 spotting scope- it works, especially for night spotting w/ an IR Illuminator. It will also work on a rifle scope although adjusting your scope is a pain.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

I just upgraded to a D760 with a Very high spec Select Alpha tube and its VERY good. i still got eye relief issues from me needing a better rail on my Sako to get my d760 further back.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

Another alternative, you can always opt toward a monoloc or similar device behind many different optics if you prefer magnified use. Eye relief gets skewered if you don't have a stock with adj length of pull...either that or lose your zero mounting your optic forward on a rail.

Eotechs work best IMHO for this application, the Aimpoint tubes seem to create a shadow effect within the FOV, as do many other reflex optics with NVD settings.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

I have used the PVS-14's behind Aimpoint's and it worked pretty good but sometimes it is like a get a shadow in my feild of vision. I ahev also used the 3x magnifier for the PVS wit hthe aimpoint and it works fine if you have enough room on your rail. I have also mounted them behind a rifle scope and they have seemed to work fine. It does screw up your eye relief however but can be done and works better than I thought it would. I have heard though never use it on anything over 223. I am actually looking for another NV scope. The 740 is ok but I do not like being locked at a single mag level. I have seen a ITT or Litton scope that had variable magnification was gen 3 and you changed the eyepiece out for day or night use with no loss of zero. I have not been able to find a scope like this on the market though. My other choice is the PVS 22,24 or 27. I like these a lot since I can use them on several rifles. I do not like the price though. If anyone has any for sale cheap let me know.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

im not sure how practical the front mounted stuff is since the weight of the gun will be a killer.

i just got a D760 and im very impressed even though im stuck at 6x mag im sure my skill will limit me more than my mag. im seeing foxes at 600 yards with a laser illuminator.

Re: Best NV optic infront of PVS14?

Make sure you use a day scope you which has a focus/parallax dial, if you want to use a rear mounted 14. It really does help to dial in a good sight picture. Shorter scope tubes are better and big objectives (where possible) as the light transmission is cut significantly when you look through the 14 and then through the day tube. IR illuminators help
