What is the best optic for 0-400 yards / 3 gun type shooting on a 16" AR.

I have been looking at the Elcan Spector DR, Nightforce 1-4, S&B 1-4 and maybe a Aimpoint with magnifier.

The Elcan seems to have zero problems on 1x. The NF and SB would probably be slow at close range. The Aimpoint/magnfier seems to be "clunky".

    Thanks.

You could do something like this:

It's fast but it puts you in open. No levers or knobs or rings or anything, just turn the rifle 30 degrees without moving your head or hands.

I have a S&B Short Dot on my 3 gun set up and it's a great scope. The dot is in the SFP so it stays the same size for fast up close on 1x and the reticle is FFP so it can be used for holds for longer range precision work at 4x.

Here's an older pic. I have an MGM Switchview on there now which makes changing power very fast.

the NF and S@B are fast at close range, I have the NF 1x4 with FC-2 reticle, it has holdovers in it, a big circle to bracket close targets, some people don't like it because the lit reticle is not daylight visible (red) it makes no difference to me, out of your options I would get one of the two variable power optics, you need magnification, and a flip to side 3 power isn't going to cut it

I'm really eyeing SWFA's contribution to the 1-4X market. Not sure when it will be released, but it certainly looks like it will fit the bill for what I'm looking for.

Burris 1-4xtr is similar to all of these mentioned so far. It's SFP, which for a 1-4 is only second to how s&b made their dot sfp and the ret ffp, with a bdc ret that matches most 5.56 carbine loads very well. The only complaint I've had is it takes a half rotation of the magnifing ring to go from 1-4. So the use of one o the quick levers won't work. For my uses this is not an issue. I wanted an optic that could be kept on my ar as a HD rifle (1x) and cranked to 4x for target or yote hunting. The bdc matching to 500 yards with 55gr loads is also nice. Haven't played with 62 and up with it yet.

The newer ones have improved illumination, which is still not like an eotech during the day, but at max setting is faintly visible on light surfaces and visible on a dark surface.

No such thing as a "best" optic for 3-gun. Many good ones. This threaed and others on this forum discuss them. Another good source is the Brian Enos multigun forum where 3-gun rifle optics are discussed ad nauseum.

Like Rob, I'm partial to the Short Dot, but that's certainly a matter of opinion.
