The Receiver, although I have a letter from BATF that says I can engrave the barrel to facilitate going back to a non-nfa gun.... however this is for an AR15 SBR if it makes a difference.
When in doubt write the NFA branch and ask the specific question, then carry the response letter around with you....

I have been doing FA sales and repair for a long time…I hate to say it ATF gave you a bullshit answer that isn’t legal the receiver has to be marked I would ask to talk to a supervisor before going that rout to be on the safe side.

I would have it engraved to the right of the Remington mark on the left side on the receiver.

I would not do that. That could be looked at as altering the manufacturers markings. I would put your engraving on the opposite side where you can find the most empty space as your engraving has to be of a certain size and depth.
