I want to get an automatic powder dispenser & a manual one-I've been thinking the RCBS 1500 for the auto and the redding 3br for the manual...any expeirences or opinions?

Re: best reloading powder dispenser

RQI has the absolute best bar none, 1/3 kernal accurite every 15 seconds over and over again.

That is the second best, 1 kernal accurite every 25 seconds.

A Chargemaster can only dream of being as good as a Prometheus, but for most a CM is a fine investment, Redding 3br is also GTG but a RCBS Uniflo is cheaper and will get the job done just as well.

You'll find Brand Cole Number on the bottom here

I vote harrel as well. Imo...best there is.

As far as all that automated crap goes. I don't own one because I don't trust them....at all. Just mo though.

" Redding 3br is also GTG but a RCBS Uniflo is cheaper and will get the job done just as well."

Well, the Uniflow is every bit as good as the Redding IF you also purchase RCBS' costly micrometer type metering chamber device. Fact is, there is no real average difference between measures of the same general design.

Since we charge powder by weight and power is a dry product of varying size kernels and we measure it by volume there is NO WAY any measure can be evaluated without saying what power we are refering to. Ball and other small grained powders measure out quite consistantly (IF the user himself is consistant). But the coarse powders most rifle shooters use simply cannot be volume dispensed with a high degree of consistancy. At the risk of causing some heart palpations, Lee's inexpensive little all plastic "Perfect" powder measure does better work with coarse powders than any other type I know of.

NO rotationg drum powder measure works really well with thin flakes of some shotgun and handgun powders, they will work in between the moving parts and cause binding.

Re: best reloading powder dispenser

I'm researching the harrell's dispensers on the sinclair's website...there are a few different ones-which is the most versatile--once I get going, I'm planning on doing everything from 9mm & .40 to .223, 30-06, & .300 WM...This website has been such a big help-Thanks in advance?

Re: best reloading powder dispenser

one other question--does the harrell's dispensers come with a powder reservior and stand? They look as though they do in the pictures, but I see that sinclair's has them advertised...Thanks again!

Re: best reloading powder dispenser

I have a charge master and a redding 3br. I used to have problems with the varget being overthrown with the charge master until I used the McDonalds straw trick and that fixed that. I use the 3br for ball powders and it is dead on and 10 times faster than the charge master and use it for my 5.56 loads. It throws them to 1/10 grn accuracy.

So for extruded powder I use the chargemaster and ball powder I use redding 3br.

Reservoir --yes, stand --no.

Re: best reloading powder dispenser

"Theoretically I could actually just have a bowl of powder and use a LEE plastic scoop as long as I'm individually weighing every charge. Yes?"

No theory about it, yes.

Before anyone buys a high cost BR powder measure it would be good to make sure it drops charges as large as you may want. Some of them are quite limited for max charges.

Re: best reloading powder dispenser

I have one of the first Harrell's Premium measures that they made. With practice and patience you can get really good with it.

For those of you that have a Harrell's, I have a spreadsheet on MS Excel with drum settings for 10 or 12 powders. I have another couple of powders to add to it. I just haven't made it that far yet. If anyone wants a copy of it just send me a regular email to: [email protected] and in the subject line type in Harrells, and I'll get it to you the next time I'm on here.

"McDonald's straw trick?" what is that...or did I miss something? Also-What powder do you use in your 5.56 loads? I'm trying to clone a black hills round both my semi-autos and bolt gun LOVE!

ALSO-where is the "for sale" section? I'm still learning how to use this site...Thanks!

That's the reason I got the "Premium" model. It has the largest "barrel" of all the ones they make. I have had no problem throwing plenty of powder for my 300WinMag with it.

Re: best reloading powder dispenser

I say go with the premium, you won't sorry you did.

I also have a rcbs with micrometer and a cheap plastic lee that does really well for pistols. Best thing about lee and pistols is...you can afford one for every pistol load you have. If you have the room that is.

Re: best reloading powder dispenser

I've been happy with my Pact. Seperate dispenser and scale so you can use the scale when you need one. I don't know what kind of accuracy you are looking for the scale only reads to the tenth of a grain. For dispensing I get an occasional .9 or .1, when I do I dump them back. I suppose by extension you could say that my loads are between XX.05 and XX.04 grains accurate. I don't know haw many kernels there are in a grain.

There are a few threads about the straw trick:

I was using tac for the 5.56 I bought it a long time ago(32 lbs haha), although my accuracy isn't all that great .6 moa to .75 moa at 200yds LC, 2800fps, 77smk, CCI-41. I didn't do a whole lot of load development for this and perhaps when it gets warmer I will work a little further on tweaking the load. A lot of guys tell me tac is a dirty powder but I shot with a can so everything is dirty accept my bolt for some strange reason.
