Re: best scope for $8-$1k??

You can usualy find a gently used Leupold mark 4 on this site for about 1k or just slightly over.
The 10x Super Sniper is said to be a good bargain but I don't have one.
I would say that for 1100 or so I would go with a 6.5-20 Mark 4 leupold

+1. With all the great glass options out there these days, there is no reason to settle with a Leupold.

In your price range you could score a non-illuminated ST-10, and possibly an illuminated one if someone was looking for cash fast. Last time I talked to Doc, he had two brand new ST-10s on the shelf, ready to ship, around that much.

Also the SWFA SS10x42HD and SS3-9x42 is supposed to be great, but I've never had either of the new generation SS's. The old ones are still a bargain for the money-have had two of them.

All of the Viper PSTs are coming in under 900, have matching reticles and turrets, FFP, and are from a company who has a track record of superb service. There is a wait on them.

There are just too many options available to settle for something substandard.

Re: best scope for $8-$1k??

Hands down, get the Sightron SIII 6-24x50 mil dot. Has some of the best glass you can find for under $1k, generous eye relief, plenty of travel, and some of the best customer service in the industry. Of course, all you can get are MOA turrets, but you've stated that isn't a big deal for you.

I have a 6-24 SIII on my 5R, and I couldn't be more impressed with the scope. Adjustments are positive and repeatable, and the glass is as good as I have seen in the price range. You can pick them up for around $750 with scope caps from Liberty Optics, and I can bet you will be happy.

I agree.

If you want more power and are willing to chance being a beta tester (I would if I had the extra dough-Sam's got awesome CS and even if you took him personally out of the picture Liberty Optics and SWFA are both great when the chips are down), I'd get in line for a Vortex PST

Re: best scope for $8-$1k??

I would say the only good option is the Viper PST. I expect good things for the price range.

The new Bushnell fits the bill too, but Vortex is a better company to be dealling with on a new product (you know what they say about the cutting edge).

There are a few new IOR offerings too, but I think they are going to be a little higher.

Just give Scott @ Liberty Optics a call, he will get you squared away.

Re: best scope for $8-$1k??

I felt compelled to register after being in the same situation. I was building my budget bolt gun a 700P, well its all here but the rings, bases, bipod and sling but anyway I wanted to stay at a grand for a scope so I got a NIB Mk4 for $1050 and went with it. But comparing, side by side not on a rifle, the PST versus the Mk4 I wish Id saved myself the 200 bucks and went with the Vortex. Comaparable glass, clicks feel similar, but the Leupold cost more, doesnt have the magnification, or the luminated reticle.

I'm not sure we can trust a guy from KY who chose to go to Tennessee for school . . .

Re: best scope for $8-$1k??

In your price range I would go with Sightron III with mil dot. Best glass I have seen for that kind of money. Great people, service, and warranty should you ever need it. My brother has a Bushnell 6500 4.5-30X50 which is really nice. I would still choose the Sightron because of the glass but its only drawback is it only has 50 moa of elevation, which is not a problem for me if you use your mildot as hold over points and adjust from there.

Re: best scope for $8-$1k??

I got a 8.5-25x50 VX-III Fine Duplex Leupold LR 30mm tube I will sell you for $800. I have box, papers, and everything. Scope is like new with NO ring marks. I had it on my 6.5x47 and want to upgrade to Nightforce BR.

Re: best scope for $8-$1k??

i would recomend either a leupold vx 111 with a 30mm maintube or a sightron s111 ,i have used both and liked them . that said if you do much lr shooting you will want to upgrade to a nightforce before long .

Re: best scope for $8-$1k??

A used ST-10
Any Sightron
A SS 10x42HD
A Vortex PST

I'd considered this myself, but passed on the idea after reading the stories with Valdada customer service. Now, I would have no reservations buying a new one from Scott at Liberty, but would be a little more hesistant with buying a used IOR.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I would still choose the Sightron because of the glass but its only drawback is it only has 50 moa of elevation</div></div>

I guess I am a little confused. Looking at the website, Sightron lists 100 MOA of travel for windage and elevation, but it appears this means 50 MOA for the windage and 50 MOA for the elevation. If this is true, you should be able to get by with a 20 MOA base. I can tell you the glass is well worth the money, and I've yet to find anyone who wasn't impressed with the glass in the SIII's.

Re: best scope for $8-$1k??

+ one for sightron i have the 4-16 42mm mildot and love it. glass quality is excellent, very good image, great price for the quality. my buddy has the 6-24 leupold mark 4 whatever it is and mine is far more clear on 14-16 power. the only downfall to my sightron is that the turret is not in whole minuetes its like 7 1/2 so it changes every rotation. dont know about different models. but just something to get used to.

Sightron upgraded to a newer model 6-24x50 a couple years ago. The new model has 100 MOA of elevation and windage. The older one has 50 MOA elevation and 60 MOA windage. The other guy must have been talking about the older model.

Here is the link to the older discontinued model.

Well to each his own but I have an awesome Leupold. Now, if you don't like them then that's your choice. I wont argue the fact that maybe they have gone down or is it just that everyone else has gotten better???? Anyway, I happen to have a great Mark4 and I would highly recommend it if your looking.

I would also say it may be a good idea to wait a couple months for the Vortex PST to come out.

Yip if a larger sized scope is OK ...the SIII 6-24 MD is a great scope (way lighter than the night force
cool.gif
)....Well actualy that is what I wanted but no one had stock at the time so I went the 8-32 model....Great scope but I will probably get a 6-24 to replace it as I hardly use 32 and 6 as a bottom end would be better,
I also have a 4.5-14 SII SF MD nice light and compact still with great glass

They also come with the sunshade and clear covers
