Rifle Scopes Best Scope for a GAP-10?

My new GAP-10 (.308) ideally should be showing up around Christmas (ordered at SHOTSHOW last Jan) and I need to make a decision on glass for it. I'm a self-admitted Schmitty fanboy. My precision bolt rifles wears a 5-25x PMII and my precision Larue AR-15 has a S&B 4-16 PMII. So the natural choice is to get the 5-25 PMII for the GAP.

However, I've been out of the scope market for a couple of years and haven't been paying attention to what's the latest and greatest out there, as I've been working overseas during that time. Is the S&B still the best glass out there for long range stuff or is there something better on the market now?

The other thing I'm concerned about is will the additional recoil impulse of the semi-auto bolt movement be harder on a scope? Anyone ever run into issue with S&Bs on a larger caliber gas gun?

BTW - the primary use will be Precision tactical rifle matches and long range steel out to 1K.

Thanks in advance for the help and advice......

IMO, any of the current crop of tactical scopes over the $2500-$3000 price point have such good glass that you're splitting hairs among them as far as image quality goes. At that point it should come down to features and what you personally want out of it.
Enough adjustment range for your caliber and distances
Appropriate mag range
Weight and durability
Illumination or not
Zero stop
FFP or SFP
Warranty and service

With those attributes considered, the S&Bs are certainly among the top, and are still considered one of the best on the market. There are several others that offer excellent performance in that price range.
Kahles
Premier
USO
Hensoldt
March
Steiner
Leupold Mk6 or Mk8
Nightforce Beast

If you wanted to stay trim and light weight for the Gap-10, I'd look at the March 3-24x42, Leupy Mk6 3-18x44 and Premier LT 3-15x50. If going full size, the S&B PM II 5-25 or any of the others listed would be excellent.

I have the S&B 5-25 MSR on my Gap-10 .308 and can't imagine a better scope or reticle. If you wanted to save a few bucks I hear the Steiners are very nice and have the MSR reticle as well. Yes I'm in lust with the MSR reticle. I also think Kahles has the new and improved model of the MSR reticle which may be a good choice also. The best part is that no matter what glass you put on that GAP-10 you'll be shooting bug-holes.

Not a GAP 10 but for aesthetics here is what a PMII looks like size wise on a .308 AR10

Such a shame such fine equipment is subject to my meager skills. My round count is low (5-600) but so far no scope issues due to recoil and I dont expect any.

Nice gun and scope. What mount is that?

And will a one piece mount be required for the GAP or can I use conventional rings? I'm getting ready to order the scope and mounts soon, so want to be sure i get the correct setup.

Thanks all for the replies......

here's mine, awsome scope

It's a Spuhr mount. You won't need to go one piece on your rifle. With the mono rail on the LMT I wasn't concerned about bridging from the upper to the handguard. Think about whether or not you will need a cantilever to obtain eye relief.

The mount is a Spuhr.

I have a 16" FNAR, FNH's .308/7.62x51 autoloader, which I think is pretty close in function and size to an AR-10 variant.
I went the other way and mounted up a USO SR-8s.
Without the bipod, the rifle weighs 12 lbs. with 20 rounds of ammo on board and handles great from the shoulder.
At some point I'll look for some medium rings so I can ditch the stock pack without losing my cheek weld.

the scopes your talking about are of a quality level that the type of firearm really makes no difference. what kind of task do you have in mind for the rifle? is weight a consideration? answer me that and I could make some good recommendations. a couple that I see havn't been mentioned, the 3-20 is a nice optic for a gas gun like that, i've also had a few guys use the 2.5-10 nightforce scopes, one of my customers is running an ar10's for hog hunting, 1.7-10x42 swarovski, and he's very happy with it.

I use a 1.8x10x44 for my shorter barrel GAP10 and a 3.2-17x44 for my precision longer barrel GAP-10. I really like the MPR reticle and find it very useful and easy to use. At least for me, I would rather have a little more on the lower magnification range for a semiauto platform.

Nice rig. But its not an AR10.

The Leupold 3-18 is great option if weight and length are a concern but you don't want to give up glass quality. I've really fell in love with that scope lately. Is an S&B, no. Is it really that far from an S&B, no. The glass in this scope is really very bright/clear and contrast is excellent. At 23 ounces, its hard to beat.

Nightforce f1. To me it is perfect for my gap-10 and I still feel that way. It is lighter than most and 15x is more than enough for shooting steel targets at that distance.

+1

F1 w/ MLR2 reticle

Premier or S&B 3-15/4-16 would be my choice. Prefer the Premier turrets and illumination design, but the PMII is at the top of the list too. Glass is flawless, great CS with Paul or Jerry, tracking is perfect, and there is nothing better than those two for a tac rig. That's if money is no question, there are a number of great optics for less than 3k that would be excellent as well. Features and available money will dictate what you should get, but being a S&B fanboy, I would go that route. Unless you want to try something new.

I have a Steiner 4-16 on my large framed AR. I would suggest you have a look at one while looking at all the other great options.

Good Luck

Do have any pictures of this scope mounted on your AR. That scope is longer then other scopes in that range. Thanks

If you're already equipped with S&B's on 2 other rifles, it makes sense to get another S&B PMII. For a GAP-10, the 4-16x50 makes a lot of sense. I personally wouldn't put the 5-25 on it. No real reason to shoot past 12x most of the time anyway.

I've recently been shooting a Schmidt 3-20 w/ a H2CMR reticle on a bolt gun. The reticle is awesome - love the .2 mil holds - and the size seems like it would be good on a GAP10. Food for thought.
