Rifle Scopes Best scope for about 500 yards of so

I am looking for the best scope for about 500 yards or so. In the process of getting a house as well so I dont really want to break the bank. I have looked at the


1.Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50 model 426245T
and the
2.Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 PA

Have never shot the vortex scope yet but have shot the Bushy.
I have had a couple of people tell me that the vortex is very nice.

To do what at 500 yards?

Just shoot steel or for groups on paper at 500 yards. You do not need that much power to shoot to 500, but it isn't a bad thing either.

Consider this: the U.S. Marines rifle qualification course includes shooting to 500 yards with iron sights with an M16 firing m855 ball ammo.

Both your choices are sound, but if you wish to use your rifle for more than just range work, you may want to consider something in the 4-14 or 4-16 range.

Take a gander at the nikon buckmaster 4-14, 6-18 or the Falcon 4-14 or 5.5-25.

500 yards was what I was avg. out. I can shoot up to 900 and if I push it (get rid of more trees and brush) I will be able to shoot up to 1000 yards or so.
