Looking to take PR1&PR2. Have a .260 that will be great for the class, but thinking I need a mil/mil scope to get the most out of it.

I'm trying to get opinions on the following:

Magnification - do I need a 3-15, or something more like a 5-25? I know that we will shoot out to 1000, not sure if a good 3-15 will be enough

Reticle - traditional mil dots or mils with hash marks?

First or Second Focal Plane. I've always shot SFP, but wondering if it would be worth investing in a FFP given that using the reticle for range finding quite a bit.

Brand - I would assume Nightforce or S&B would be great. RO sells a bushnell with lots of magnification. Anyone used one? Like them?

Thanks for any suggestions, ideas. If I'm not asking the right questions, please let me know.

Re: Best Scope for Rifles Only

There are plenty of scopes available to meet your needs.

The Bushnell you are talking about is the HDMR and should serve you very well.

Lower on the price list is the weaver 3-15x ffp mil/mil.

Higher on the list are several IOR models, the new gen 4 have apparently been working great.

Nightforce F1, USO, S&B, Steiner and Premier.

For the type of shooting you will be doing there, FFP is the best option.

Re: Best Scope for Rifles Only

I took a class from RIfles Only. About half of us had Bushnell 3.5-21 HDMR/G2DMR. Worked fine for the class. Many others will work I am sure...

The important part is the class. Hard to do better than Jacob and company. You are going to love it. Enjoy.

Re: Best Scope for Rifles Only

I would suggest trying a 3-12x50 if you can borrow one from a buddy.. I find that this fits my needs very nicely, and i do shoot out to a 1000, I know most will go the more the better, if you benchrest thats great, if you engage multiple targets not so good, your higher magnifactions will narrow you field of view.. you might want to ask yourself what kinda of shooting will you be doing and that should help you understand how much magnification you will need in a scope, just trying to help out.. hope you find what you need

Re: Best Scope for Rifles Only

I also used a 3-17 and to be honest, it was a little high on magnification for what you will be doing in the class for me. I don't think you will need to get to 25 power at any point in the class. You might end up dialing it back down constantly. For 1k and in a 15 power is plenty in my opinion. I had a friend running a fixed 10 power and he was one of the top 3 shooters in the class, next to two LE snipers. Most of the brands the other gentlemen mentioned are more than sufficient. You wont regret going, enjoy yourself and make sure you got some extra money for the coronas you might end up buying. I know I had to pay up.

Took the class a few years back. You will learn a lot. A scope with the following features from any of the top mfg's will help assure you get the most from the class:

3-5x bottom end and top end of 12-25x. I had my magnification on 10-15x for 90% of the class

FFP

Reticle with dots and/or hashes to be used for holdover, hold under and range estimation

Make sure the reticle demarcations match the adjustment turrets (MOA/MOA or Mil/Mil)

Good, solid rings and bases. You'll need solid mounting for the activities you'll do.

Enjoy the class!
