I am thinking about the Kestrel model that is $80. All I want it to do is give me the wind speed.

Spend the extra money and get a used 2500. With the other environmentals and a simple chart you can calculate DA.

I can tell you my local hardware store sells wind meters for really cheap. When i wanted to buy one, I looked at Kestrels and them, and the quality of the build was night and day different. Kestrel units are designed to be quality tools which are calibrated to NIST standards. You really have to remember that you get what you pay for. Rather than buy a cheap wind meter, I would instead suggest using the Buefort scale or some similar scale and just read what the wind is doing rather then invest in a cheap tool that you come to rely on - and then it breaks.
Kestrels come with a 5 year warranty from a manufacturer who really stands behind their products. In my opinion, its not worth it to go with an cheapo wind meter. Its really not a lot to get a used one - and even if it breaks after the warrenty (since you got it used) you get a discount on a replacement from Kestrel through their loyalty program here:

if you can buy a broken low end model, you can get a discount of like half off a new one. If you really need to keep the cost down, this is the route I suggest.

Watch ebay carefully. Every now and then a kestrel comes across at a really good price.
I managed to score a gently used Kestrel 4000NV for $127 ($137 with shipping).
Not the top of the line, but it suits me.

My friend has the kestrel 4500 it just seemed to be a lot of options that I did not need to pay for. I want a unit to give me wind calls while hunting deer and prairie dogs. I have read bad reviews of the caldwell and thought that I would get a more reliable reading from the $80 kestrel

If all you need is wind then the Kestral 1000 can be had on eBay for $74 new(free shipping, and bids on used start at $35. If later you want to take you shooting past 500Y, then knowing the temp, pressure, altitude will assist with an accurate dope. Those features can be found on the 2500, 3000, and 4000 models.

I would suggest saving for a better unit. Not to far in the future you will want something better and you will be right back here asking for more advice.
