Wondering which of these is better for a FFP scope. Obviously the TMR has the advantage in general, but is it much harder to see at lower magnification than the Mildot in an FFP scope? Enough to warrant getting the Mildot over the TMR?

I've never looked through a Leupold Mark 4 FFP and I'm considering picking one up.

For on the fly holdovers I like the Mildot. For ranging and more precise holdovers I like the TMR. I've had both.

However they're both hard to use when looking through the bottom of a coke bottle and the open center on the TMR S.U.C.K.S!

If your gonna pay that much for an optic you can do better than Leupold.

IMHO, 41

Well, I get a decent discount at Midway, but I'm looking to pick one up used under 1k. The real problem is that no one makes the scope I want right now. The new Premier light tactical looks like it will be close, but it still has a 50mm obj, and I don't want to be an early adopter on a 2k+ scope. So I was going to pick up the Leupold and save and wait until someone makes what I really want: ~20oz, ~40mm obj., 10-15x mag, mil/mil, FFP, illum.

I like the TMR better. For a tactical scope, if you have it on such a low power, I'm assuming that you are shooting at something close, which means you aren't concerned about minute of angle, more minute of torso, IMHO.

I was looking at this same scope, and went so far as to go up to the factory to get my hands on one. Great glass, bright and clear, with good contrast. No illum yet, which is disappointing for a scope of this price, and I didn't find much in the used that I couldn't match with a factory Mil discount.

If Leupold wants to sell this one they need to add a few features before the Viper PST line is readily available (without backorder). No Z stop and illum for over $1,500?

Re: Better Leupold FFP reticle: Mildot or TMR?

It really depends on your power range. In most FFP scopes I have seen, its really hard to use the Mil Scale below 6X, as it gets bigger so does the dot to the point that it may cover up your target, which is why I prefer a TMR in a FFP scope and selected one with a minimum power range greater than 6X.

In spite of the obvious love for Leupold on this site, the MK4 ER/T M5 series scope is a very good scope. I bought My MK4 ER/T 8.5-25X50 M5 for about $600 cheaper than I could get the NF F1, which is currently only offered in 3.5-15X. I originally, was going to get an F1, but when I weighed everything out, the M5 fit my needs better and was significantly less expensive, atleast to me.

Below 6x I'm guessing that you will be close enough that milling the target won't be the make or break of a shot.. About the Luppy.. it's a really good piece of glass. Repeatability, tracking clarity, etc. I have had a Mk4 for 5 years and it's been utterly reliable. I just wish that they would add some of the bells and whistles. Take the 4.5-16 FFP with M5 knobs, and add a high speed turret option, zero stops, and illum and you would have one bad ass scope! Really, how much R&D costs would it take to put on a high speed turret and a zero stop function?

Agreed, although if i could find a deal on the Leupold Mk 4 M3 i would love it. On the contrary i love the fact that it has 1MOA clicks, because i'm looking for a scope for a SPR build. Since the elevation knob only has 1 revolution it has a sense of zero stop. I like the idea of it on a 5.56 due to being able to quickly dial in for a 500yd shot.

Re: Better Leupold FFP reticle: Mildot or TMR?

I agree that having FFP on a 10x scope isn't as much of a concern if the magnification were higher. The problem I see is say you need to dial back to 8x, for example, because of low light or whatnot. The reticle is now useless and with FFP still plenty visible for use at that magnification.
