Finally talked my father in law into building a bolt elk gun. He was looking around and asked me about Bighorn Arms' action. Anyone have a rifle with one of these on there?

I did a google search of the hide content and came up with a couple of threads and this article from Lowlight:
http://www.snipershide.com/2010/07/thunder-beast-arms-shark-suppressor-gemtech-sandstorm/

Oddly enough these guys are local to me (being in Brighton, CO myself), but I tend not to want to bug gunsmiths or shops like this with my questions directly until I have the dollar in hand to throw down on thier product

I talked to a guy at a local club who has one and he seemed to be pretty positive on the action, but frankly my confidence level in his opinion isn't that great as he is one of those fine folks who has invested untold money in an iron he doesn't shoot very well.

I would be interested in any experience folks have with it. Also, the site lists some stuff about the floating bolt head and they tout a barrel lug that is supposed to be somehow new/different. Any explanation on those would be great as I haven't found a good one yet for either feature.

Re: Bighorn Arms Action

The floating bolt head is basicly a copy of the Savage bolt head. The idea being that it will correct for any misalignment that exists. While that may be true my opinion is that if things are machined correctly to begin with the floating head is a non issue. Other than that I did like what I saw of the actions about a year ago.

Re: Bighorn Arms Action

I have been shooting the Bighorn Arms rifle quite a bit, in fact yesterday I took it out and mounted one of the new Hi Rev NF on it, and I can tell you it is an Hammer.

Their action is excellent, with a brand new scope it only needed 3/10ths of a Mil to hit center out of the box. That tells me it is straight & true. The more I shoot it the more impressed I am with the Bighorn Arms rifle and action.

The barrel is first rate too, accurate to a fault.

It's renewing my faith in custom actions ...

Glad to hear it because I love my 591.

although I have no issue with a 591, I do have issue with many others though.

Saying it renews my faith, means in what "Bighorn Arms" is doing, most continue to march down a narrow path. </div></div>

Can you shed any light on the Holland recoil lug? Holland's own site isn't very explanatory about what their tolerances, etc are.

I have some other video too... there is some in the online training section as well with the Bighorn rifle.

Re: Bighorn Arms Action

I played with one when I was in CO last year. I think I was the first to ask about it on the Hide. Having played with several 700 style actions, the Bighorn was probably the nicest one I have felt and the machine work is top notch. It's good to see that it's getting more notoriety.

Re: Bighorn Arms Action

These guys come out of the computer and aerospace industry in terms of machining.

Micro-precision.

I mean their skills are beyond what I can personally describe - I don't have the vocabulary, but seeing the shop and even just the trinkets they have laying around -- one was a solid seamless octagon piece of stock that was actually a puzzle piece, yet when you initially looked at it, it was one piece and not 6 or how many pieces fit so the tolerances hid the seams between the parts. And it slide apart smooth as glass.

I am cutting a 6 minute video together out of like 18 minutes of combined lessons, so I will put that up...

Re: Bighorn Arms Action

William Roscoe is putting together a 308 build using the Big Horn Action, and I knew that I made the right decision as soon as I picked up the action from my FFL. I'm not a machinist, but it's easy to recognize good work when you see it. Plus, AJ Goddard was patient enough to walk me through the in's and out's of his action, and that speaks volumes to me.

It's good stuff, and I can't wait to get the completed rifle in the next couple of weeks. Frank's videos make the wait much harder...

Re: Bighorn Arms Action

here is a short piece of video of the Bighorn Arms rifle during my afternoon zeroing the new Nightforce F1 with Hi Rev turrets
