Bison Gun

As I originally posted we have no problems with the current setup and we will have some sound reduction when I put the can on both guns. I have experimented with solid copper bullets to ensure not led from the fmj’s we currently use. Still not sure about the copper. We try to take them behind the ear whenever possible. For those talking about the skull. Bison sculls are kinda different they have bone, then honeycomb, then bone. If you get into the really big boys, 2000lb or up they are really thick. I watched one take a 300mag and only flinch. Then a 45-70 being the ear finished him. We kill 30+ a week almost year round for almost 30 years and rarely have to do a follow up shot. I was just curious about getting the sound down so as to keep the neighbors happy. I was curious what the 300 or 8.6 blackouts were like since they still carry some decent energy at impact. Thanks for everyone’s input and I’ll post what I found out as I go farther down the copper bullets rabbit hole.

Well if you go 300 blk the 110 tac-tx and discreet selous are the best rounds available for super and subsonic.

I took a bunch of TACTX 110s and 110 Vmaxs I loaded in 300 blk out to Texas with me on a recent pig hunt and found that the TACTX consistently passed through both sides. Routinely requiring follow up shots.

All were neck or shoulder/shield shots.

Where the vmax would punch a shoulder and det in the cavity normally resulting in a DRT

That being said. TACTX did a better job of leaving blood trails on the ground. The pigs that ran with vmax were not recovered.

They are nasty little things.

Bison Cowboy,

I raise bison and I think what you are currently doing sounds just fine. I would just get a quiet suppressor like tbac dominus or 338 ultra. I wouldn't screw with the subs. A 338 ultra is phenomenal at suppression. Your first obligation is to the animal and the owner. The skull is thick and you need penetration. What you don't want is fragments contaminating the meat in any way. You are selling a food product after all. A lot of producers are selling just about every square inch of the animal so keep that in mind. Skulls and brains have value on a bison. I know a lot of producers out there that do on farm harvest and hear a lot of their stories and can tell you bison are very tough. Some go right down and some are nearly bullet proof. Never go in with the attitude of using the minimum you can get away with. As a processor you represent the industry as well so do the best and most humane job you can and things will go well. If you do want to try something else I would experiment on fresh skulls for some time and make sure it performs first.

If you poke little holes in brown bear bones like those plates, they’ll probably get very mad at you.

For another point of reference, from my own tests a 338 Win Mag will go cleanly through 1/4" AR500 plate at 200 yards with 200 grain Hornady SST.

As ScarlettRed said. Bison are tough. I've put down 6 mature bulls for a local herd owner. So far. A 30-06 with 180 grain accubonds has been the ticket for me. All shot inside 60 yards. Bullet placement is critical. Huge looking heads, but not a very big target. A good friend that works in Nebraska on a 3000+ bison ranch uses a 308 loaded with the same bullet. Excellent results. Hope this helps.
