I'm looking for a blast cabinet do blast a few barreled actions a year. I've seen some that are long enough but good grief the price is way out of my league. I've found some smaller ones (23" length) that I though about getting and cutting the side out and make longer, but was curious as to if anyone knew of one that was around $300-$350 that was ready to go.

Somebody here posted a link in another thread, of a blast cabinet which was made out of a 45 gallon drum. This is why I am looking for a drum, and do you think I can find that link now?

Anyone know of what I am speaking? I figure this is perfect considering the opening door of the lid. When the drum is mounted on its side, it'd be nearly perfect. Only way it would be better, is if it came that way to begin with. HA

I have seen them on eBay. My concern would be the $$ you save up front would be spent on media trying to keep the pickup fed.....just a though, i have not used one.

I have been eyeing the Cyclone E500 for a while now as a starter cabinet but am still undecided. Its 28" wide by 18" deep which is enough if you take the action off the barrel which can be a PITA in some situations but can be worked around for awhile until your blasting needs increase.

FWIW:

A trend I've seen with the "home doo'rs" is to buy tools/equipment suited for the task they have at hand.

In spirit I get it, but in practice (least in my case) this is what happens: 6 months later your wishing you'd of bought/made a bigger unit.

A year ago I was faced with the same dilemma for my shop. After scouring the internetz I settled on the large cabinet offered by Grizzly Industrial. It cost me all told around $1500 to have it delivered. By and large its a good mix of bang/buck.

All I've done is ditch the gun it came with. Upgrading to a better one (carbide nozzle and regulated for my compressor's cfm rating) has made it worry free/reliable.

If you elect to go this route, get a different nozzle and have a tube of silicon caulk on hand during assembly. It'll help to seal it up better. The factory made rubber between the upper/lower cabinet halves will leak.

Good luck.

If your buying and can foot the extra to get a bigger cabinet you will never regret it. +1 on the silicone, buy the good silicone the first time and hope you never have to take it apart

I was in the same boat. I thought about getting a cabinet, but then reality set in. I am only doing a few a year, I will blast outside and replace the media when its gone. This way I don't have to loose a big chunk of real estate in the garage for something that gets used 3x per year.

At my former company we bought this unit & worked well. xray</div></div>

Picked one up this morning. Brought it home and went to work on it. It seemed like it would be too short so I made it taller and added some casters so I can move it out of the way when I'm not using it. Only problem is that it's too tall now. Gonna chop it down a couple 4 inches tomorrow. Garage needs a SERIOUS cleaning too.

drywall and lights next on the list? just kidding, cabinet looks good. mine is on casters also, makes it easy to move around when you need to. you will want to get a dust collector on that if you dont have one. otherwise everything will be covered & you dont want to breath it in.

I bought a Cyclone a few years back, but it was the plastic floor model. Threw it out a year later because it fell apart and leaked like crazy. I didn't look up the one you posted but if it's plastic pass on it and get a metal one from HArbor Freight. I recently downsized to the benchtop model from Harbor Freight and while it's not a great unit it works better.
