I am positive this has been discussed ad nauseam, however, after several minutes of using the advanced search tool to no avail, I have decided to start a thread. If one knows a thread with this topic, please link me there. Until then, here goes:

I am trying to plan a rifle build off a remington 700 action chambered for 338 lapua. I would really like it for long range home defense. I appreciate the ease of use of a detachable box magazine, however, would like to know about my other options, ie hinged floorplate, and a blind magazine. I am of the understanding that the different types effect accuracy of a rifle through a variety of variables, to include the rigidness of the action.

Could anyone elaborate on the differences and how they relate to the accuracy of a rifle? Perhaps a link to an online article? If magazine fed actions are so inaccurate, are they not used in 1,000m benchrest competitions, etc?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Welcome to the Hide, and thank you for playing the Shout Box game. Make sure to fill out your profile before Switchblade screams in your ear, and don't forget to tip your waitress.

Dealing with the original question, a repeater action will most likely have less rigidity than a solid bottom, but I don't think most shooters will be able to isolate the accuracy differences.

For a defensive setup, the D/M is more desirable. The floorplate allows unloading more easily than the blind mag, and that's about the name of that tune.

I was about to question the compatibility of home defense with long range, and then I realized you're asking from Alaska. Ah, yes...; the bears..., right...

A 338 lapua for home defense vs polar bears. I don't know to many people that need to defend 1200 yards out. Plus a 338 lapua precision rifle is going to be very heavy. If it was me I would get a 308 or 260 for a precision gun and get a 338 win mag or 375 H&H hunting rifle to take care of bears.

If for no other reason than most scopes that would be used on the 338 lapua would be not recommended for close encounters. You open your front door and a bear starts to charge from 20 yards away, our going to wish you had open sights or something like a 1 - 4 power variable.
