I got to shoot my new AAC SPR/M4 this weekend, the first time I ever shot a suppressor. The first face full of gas I took was a surprise.

I was talking to a buddy of mine about a gasbuster charging handle. He suggested looking up using RTV around the handle to create a seal. Has anyone done that successfully? Or should I just dropmthe coin on a Gasbuster?

Re: Blowback blows

If you can afford a gasbuster CH, I highly recommend them. I run gasbuster CHs on all my ARs that I shoot suppressed and they do an excellent job of preventing/redirecting blowback.

If you need some time to put the dough together for one...then the RTV trick works very well. I actually just recommended this to someone here on the Hide the other day. Here's a link to the process:

Good luck!

Re: Blowback blows

Go with the Gas buster. Also make sure the rings on the bolt are within spec as well. Recently had to change mine as now I really dont get any blow back at all.

No, not necessary and won't influence accuracy in the least. I'm also for the Gas Buster. Great product in my experience.

Re: Blowback blows

Dang, that RTV trick really looks like a smart way to save about a hunred bucks or so on the gasbuster+shipping.

I've already got a gasbuster charging handle, so no worries here, but I'd certainly recommended the RTV method to somebody looking to save money and shoot their assault rifle suppressed (not that those really go hand in hand too often lol).

Seems hard to go wrong when its only a 3 dollar investment. Worst thing that can happen is you say "Screw it that was 3 bucks wasted" and then jump online and order the Gasbuster.

Re: Blowback blows

Does this RTV trick help with the AR rimfire conversions? The gas-buster doesn't work with the CMMG conversion bolts (doesn't fit). I've never been able to tell whether the blowback on those is coming through the CH port or the ejection port..

It should work fine for the rimfire AR-15 upper coversions...no reason it wouldn't. Same basic operating principles.

Why do people always gotta make a big deal out of the collars and cuffs matching on their ARs?!?!?!

All laughing/joking aside...any of the RTV/gasket/sealants will work well. Just try to get one that is rated for a high temp (most are 500F degrees rated) and oil/solvent resistant.

Re: Blowback blows

I know, I know...lets put some silicone or gasket material between our faces and high pressure gas and particulate blow back! After some unknown round count of heating and hardening it will loosen up, be hard enough to fragment and then when we use our solvents it will....blow back.

Buy the handle. Eye protection.

I have seen/used suppressed ARs (including 308/260 guns) with the RTV fix on/around the CH after several thousand rounds and it was as good/in place/unmolested as the day it was installed. It holds up very well and unless you are using some seriously lightweight crap (like shoe goo for instance...sorry VA), it will work fine and hold up fine without risk of flying debris to the shooter. I personally prefer the GB CH for a variety of reasons, but for those without sufficient fundage...the RTV is a fine working fix.

Re: Blowback blows

H2 Buffer and switching to a Full Auto Bolt Carrier will slow the action down considerably.
This used along with the Gas Buster or RTV make shooting suppressed AR platforms quite a bit more pleasant.

The alternative is to only shoot when there is at least a 10Mph full value wind.
