I just received a set of BNVD-SG-UL (w/ L3 filmless WP tubes) that I purchased second hand. Upon turning on the unit, I noticed a bright spot on the left tube that does not go away even when I block all light sources. The bright spot is pretty small, but the seller did not mention this prior to completing the transaction.

Is this an emission point? Is this something that can get worse and should be sent in for warranty service?

I tried to take a pic the best I could, see attached pic.

If its the set off the arfcom EE, its should still be under warranty. NVD should warranty. Though you wont have nods for a bit either way. Up to you how you want to play it, but yeah if the seller didn't disclose it, this is definetly an issue that cant be brushed past.

Thanks guys. I will contact the seller. According to seller he was original owner and purchased from JRH in mid 2020. Hopefully both of us are made whole here.

Yes it is the set off the arfcom EE. Are emission points repairable? If NVD warranties it, do they repair the tube, or replace it with a new one?

They can be "repaired" but its far less than ideal . Laser rework of the area can "seal" the emission point. Those tubes were nicely matched and it'd be a shame to lose them, so I can imagine what you're going thru.

But such procedures would lead to a BIG spec around the area like .009 and above. So you wouldn't be happy with it, if you and the original owner is going to be squared away by warranty, getting a replacement tube will probably be your best bet.

Please let us know, I've always wondered how larger firms dealt with issues like these.

Edit: attached a photo of a tube that had emission points sealed.

Reached out to the seller and to NVD. The seller is being great about it and said he would accept the unit back and give a full refund. NVD said they would cover emission points under warranty, but I'm waiting for a call back from an NVD technician to discuss in detail. Will wait to hear from NVD tech before I make a decision to return to seller or send to NVD to replace.

How hard it would be to find another great match for my blemless right side tube, I wonder? Regardless, will keep you guys updated.

Right now demand is far outstripping supply, tube specs that probably would've been passed on six months ago are now selling for top dollar.

So on replacing the tubes, that's the question I would like to know. Will they match you up with tubes that are similarly spec'd? I'd imagine that's also dependent on stock they have on hand. At which point would they give you the option of waiting for a right set to appear if all they have now are not as attractive?

Then the question of how long would you be waiting and would you be willing to wait that long (or realistically longer).

Or would they just offer to repair the emission point?

Emission points are repairable. I have had two of them removed from tubes. There are just few qualified outfits that can do this work. Both times I had this done only a tiny spec was left. Very minor blem and nothing like the picture above.

Have before a d after pics? Which outfit?
Ident Marking did the work. They have a part time employee who specializes in this work. I do not have before and after pics. The two tubes that had the EPs were eventually built into a set of Mod3s which I sold a while ago to a friend. However, since I am so lucky, I have recently acquired a PVS-14 that has an EP. Not sure what the odds are by getting three tubes afflicted by this but I will eventually get it repaired, just not in a rush right now.

Just to update everyone... NVD customer service has been truly excellent. They do not repair emission points, but will replace with a new matched tube. In terms of wait times, they give warranty replacements priority, meaning I don't have to go to the back of the line behind everyone who is in queue on a backordered new unit. I'm very pleased with how NVD has handled this and cannot speak more highly of them. I've shipped my BNVD off to NVD and will update the thread when I get it back.

They're excellent as I mentioned. Glad to hear you go the fast pass.

Update: NVD replaced my faulty tube with a new tube that was perfectly matched in less than a week. Excellent customer service! Very pleased.
I would not have expected anything less.

They are an excellent long standing NV company that is one of the few ISO 9001 Certified NV builders out there and if I remember correctly, the first builder to offer a 10 year warranty.

Ident fixed an emission point in a tube for me as well. Can't even tell it was there now. Wouldn't be the road I'd go down if the tube is under warranty, but definitely an option if you need a repair. Glad to see this got sorted out for OP.

From what I gather, Ident has the machinery that L3 used to use to fix tubes, along with the employee who ran it for the last twenty or so years. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again for a similar problem.
