Bolt action 7.62x39?

Hey guys what's up. I'm new to the forums and was just Looking at getting a good bolt action rifle that fires 7.62x39 ammunition. I'm wanting something in the area of about $500.00 or less if possible. I'm not a hardcore shooter or anything. I typically go shooting with a 22 but I'm looking to get something with a little more punch that isn't to expensive on the gun or the ammo. I was reading around and I have found that the Ruger M77 Hawkeye is pretty good. But I was wanting your opinion.

What bothers me is that it appears only the "Compact" model can fire the 7.62x39 round. But I could be wrong.I would really like the "Alaskan" model if it shoots in 7.62x39. Well that's all I have for now. Hope you can help. Thank you

Remington made one on the mini mauser action it is a good little shooting rifle, and you can pick them up used online I believe the model is a 799.

Good luck on your quest!

Thanks I'll check it out... I actually just came across this idea someone posted on another forum. What do you think?

"<span style="text-decoration: underline">If you can find a friendly smith, it is easy to convert the Lee Enfield to 7.62x39; remove the barrel, trim it a bit and recut the threads & rechamber in 7.62x39. For a while it was a popular conversion in the UK and much more accurate than an SKS/AK47</span>."

Re: Bolt action 7.62x39?

On cutting the threads and using the old barrel. I would check into the following part.
If i remember right Most 7.62 x 39 ammo is .311 dia and a 303 brit would be a .30 dia bullet which if I am right about the diameter. This fact would hinder your shooting fun. I would check with someone more gunsmith savey than me but just food for thought.
