Bolt Action Build

So here I am posting for the first time on SH and I am going to ask a question that will draw much debate and controversy and hopefully some good results.
I am looking to build a long range (1000+ yard) accurate, bolt action rifle and would like the help of the SH members to recommend top of the line (quality, durable, functional) components for this rifle. I have been a seeker of advice from SH forums for many years now but never created a profile because I could find most any answer by searching the forum. I did find a great post on here that listed all the rifle components that were used by competitive shooters and it was very interesting to see what many of them were running as far as caliber and other items but they had very specific competition requirements that they were trying to fill which I am not.
I am simply looking to build a bolt action rifle that will push a round 1000 yard down range accurately and consistently every time so long as the shooter (me) does my part.
For my specifications: I am looking for a caliber that can span the distance and still have enough punch to drop a target (not sure about the rules but let's say a zombie sized target) but not beat up my shoulder if I were to shoot a hundred plus rounds. (I don't know about everyone but I am not "manly" enough to sit behind a 50 cal for 100 rounds at a time other wise the caliber discussion would be over) I am looking for insight into the barrel ( length, twist and manufacturer), stock, base, rings optics even the trigger and bipod that you would recommend.
Now to answer the questions that I can see coming my way, budget lets say up to $50,000 (I would prefer not to spend that obviously, nor do I think I need to in order to accomplish my goal, but if I had to I could so don't hold back because of price, but it has to be justified to spend the $). My shooting experience, I have had Army ABR training spent some time in the sandbox and attended the GPS Sniper School in AZ so I am confident in my ability to shoot a rifle. US vs. sourced components, I always prefer to buy Made in the USA, but if there is a better barrel made somewhere in Europe, or a trigger group that comes from another country I will consider if there is not a comparable part made in the USA. Where am I going to shoot 1000+ yards! I own a fair amount of land that affords me the ability to shoot at ranges over 1000 yards, so on my own private land. My size, I am 6'2" 232lbs with longer arms so I need a stock that can either fit a large frame man or has some adjustability.
That's about all I can think of for questions about me, sorry that my first post on the site is so lengthy. I will keep a tally of the parts I select for the build, how much I spent on each and of course post pictures of my rifle once it is complete.
Thanks in advance for all your input, now let the questions and comments begin...

First off welcome to the forum! Now I'm no expert by any means just like to shoot long range. I was going to suggest if the 338 Lapua might be something your interested in. With this round you could shoot 2000+ yards and still have the knock down power. Sounds like you have the land for it! It's comfortable to shoot also and I'm a way smaller guy than you. Can't offer much on rifle build components as I have a factory savage 110 BA.

Grizzdude. Thanks for the reply. The Savage was an attractive option that I looked into. As far as a factory rifle it seems to offer a lot. Also the .338 from what I have read is a capable cartridge. I have not had the privilege of getting behind one yet but it is at the top of my "want" list.
Thanks for the welcome!

Strike33. Thanks for the reply. That is an interesting option. I have looked into AI stocks and such but not into the complete rifle system. I do like the interchangeable barrels and caliber options. I would not get to do much "building" with that system, but I will definitely look into it further.

Midwestside, that is quite a weapon system. I don't know how man portable that would be, but I guess I didn't mention that previously. I would like to be able to carry this rifle not just shoot from a bench. But thank you, I am getting some good ideas already.

according to JBM online, a Sierra 175gr match king for .308 has 628ft lbs of energy at 1000 yards. For zombie sized targets, I would expect that would be enough energy to do the trick. 800 ft /lbs is recommended for large game (Elk), but a zombie would be closer to medium size game :). Of course, the 175 is a match bullet - and likely you want more penetration - at least I would for say a long range kill on a Deer. Though, I would not at this point take a 1000 yard shot - since I am not confident it would be an ethical kill.

Based on your parameters, I would recommend either:

AI (in AX or AW) in .308
DTA SRS-A1 with .308 conversion
or custom rifle using any of the great actions being produced (Stiller, Badger, Big Horn (IIRC AJ's action) etc)

If you want the ability to add other calibers later - then the PSR or the DTA are really the way to go. I don't know much about the PSR, but can highly recommend the DTA.

.308 ammo is cheap - comparatively - and with the bigger bullets you can retain even more weight down range (keeping energy high - with a high BC bullet).

If you want to shoot LR, but don't want to compete in a game that requires a specific caliber, I'd completely bypass 308 Win. There are waaay better options. If you wanted a to stick with a short action, you might consider a 260 Rem. I haven't shot one at LR, but I hear they perform well. 284 seems very popular with the F-Open crowd as well. These guys might be on to something with the AI. Those things look pretty sweet! I'm sure you can find a great rifle for less than $10k.
Good luck!

If you wanted to get the experience of "the build" then look into a Badger M2013 Long action, KRG Whiskey Chassis.
The long action would allow to run most of the common long range calibers and switch back and forth rather easily. Plus you would get to spec everything out yourself

Any of the high end actions like stiller to start. Buy a quality barrel. I choose broughton in .284. A quality smith to chamber, crown and thread the barrel. I like the 7mm-08. Mcmillian stock bedded. For optics I'd go with S&B or USO. You'd be WELL under $10000. And have tons left for custom dies and components. All the extra money can't get anymore accuracy then bug hole groups. Just my opinion. Should be fun to ponder tho. Working without a budget sure sounds fun. :)

If you want to go an easy route call GAP and speak with Ken about having an extreme hunter built for you in 6.5 SAUM.
There is a lengthy thread on this you could look at first. They can tailor make one to your specs, and you'd have plenty of money left over for a hensoldt/premier/shmidt or whatever flavor of high end optics you like.
Only downside is you need to reload - you did not mention if you were doing factory only or loading your own ammuntion.

Nfoley. True, I did not mention if I was going to be loading my own ammunition. I do plan to begin hand loading in the very near future, getting some practice in .223 an .40 pistol. I am hoping to use a caliber that has a somewhat readily available ammunition, subject to current political issues and backlash of shooting (I do not intend to get political, but I'm sure we have all felt the ammo crunch in some way). I am very interested in the 6.5, it is a cartridge that I do not know much about and will be researching ASAP.

well I will only offer this, I do not have disposable income of that nature. I could only dream of such. If I had that kind of money, I would be making a call to Robert Gradeous or another builder that "helps" you build your rifle..
Add to that I would build... defiance, badger, or similar action, Manners t4 folding with mini chassis( custom refinished by shortbus in a functional but talented paint scheme) bartlein, broughton or rock barrel, fluted by campfeld, and a chambering in a 284 or 308 based caliber..( thinking 280 rem AI, or the plain old 30.06 if long action or if short 260, 7mm08 , 284 win.
next would be a refit of the reloading room for all the goodies needed to assemble and reload said caliber with about 5000 of each component using lapua, norma, rws or other brass..
top it off with a nice S=B scope
and another LR class to prove its worth
Good Luck Pleae post up some pics when done

I'd choose 6.5 saum shooting a 140gr bullet 3200fps, 2500rnd bbl life. Thats faster than a 6.5-284 and has more barrel life. But with your budget I'd buy a AI AX 338 with monopod, quick adjust, folder then get it threaded here and top it off with a nice suppressor. 338 laupa do have lots of power, but if your going to build then you could go AI (ackley improved)or even go the bigger 375 sledgehammer 338 lapua necked up and improved. The 338 would be the best choice since 375 bullets are rather hard to find. I'd run defiance deviant, 30in 1:9 twist bbl, 338 lapua improved to shoot the 300s faster :) , mcmillan or manners stock, huber trigger, NF beast, atlas bipod, now thats a rig! it'd be a beast to carry (just like any 338) if your wanting a light rifle the 6.5 is a better choice. Oh and dta srs you get the best of both worlds being able to run 338 down to 243, (or now 223) and its quick change so probably best choice.

I agree with the recommendation for Broughton barrels. At the end of the day a quarter minute rifle is a quarter minute rifle. A Stiller can shoot just as good as a surgeon. It's up to you to decide if the difference is worth the money. That being said sounds like you have plenty to build whatever you want.

You need to home in on your specs and the weight that you want to really proceed. So far 338 and 260 have been suggested. That should let you know that your specs are a little too vague. Are you going to be hunting with this and at what ranges. Taking a whitetail at 50 yards with a 338 will tear it up pretty good. At the same time taking a deer with a 6.5 at 1200 would not be the best idea either.

Are you going hunting for sheep in the mountains with thin air. I wouldn't recommend taking an AI to 8500 feet.
Are you going to be shooting at long distances? How many ft lbs of energy do you require? Is barrel life a concern? You certainly have enough money for many barrels, but do you want your rifle to have down time changing those barrels. AI and DTA have an answer for that, but again not at sheep hunter weight.

Do you want a shorter handy rifle or a 30" poker.

Is this supposed to be a 1 do all rifle?

If I had 50 k to spend on a bolt action it would look something like this

AI in 308 with a2.0 folder night force scope and 6.5 creedmore barrel

GAP non typical in 280 with night force

A high end AR10

A high end AR15

A high end 1911

A couple of cooper or anchultz 22 rim fires

A couple of nice benelli autos

A couple of nice beretta o/u with tubes and barrels. Maybe some nice throwers.

A few smith revolvers

A nice colt single action

Point being a lot of guys on this sight have 50 k in guns. But they are generally in collections and owners are best served that way. No one gun or rifle can do it all.

Swampbuck, good point, I suppose I was being a little to vague when asking for input. I realize that I could take the $ and hand it to a fancy precision rifle builder and have a great rifle that would perform as it should. However I am somewhat of a stubborn man and I like feel what I am building as i am building it so I can make tweets as I go not once I have something completed and have to swap out something. As for your questions: will I be hunting? Yes I would like the rifle to be capable of taking game (mostly deer) should the urge arise. I currently own an AR which I do not hunt with, I have a .223 bolt action for small game and a .308 bolt action for larger game to about 300yards if I have a clean shot, but usually not that far out. I am looking for a rifle that is able to take down a 2 legged target (again, I do not know if I can post a more specific target type) at over 1000+ yards.
I will not be using this rifle at altitude, I believe that the highest peak in WI is a couple hundred feet if that, so no high altitude sheep hunting. I don't require a multi caliber rifle, although the idea is interesting but not a requirement.
I would prefer to have a rifle that will last me for several year, especially at this kind of price point so yes barrel life is a concern to me.
Ft Lbs of energy is up for debate at this point, in my time overseas I saw some shots that still to do this I don't understand how they took out their target, mostly dumb luck I guess? I know that I could have a 50cal with plenty of energy at 1500 yards to take down a jeep but I don't want to shoulder that or carry the weight around so the caliber/energy/shoot-ability is really something I need to focus my attention on. I am however leaning toward something in the 30 caliber family.
I do like your list of firearm choices!!!!! I do agree that not one gun can do all things, I am simply looking to add a long distance accurate rifle to my collection and as I said I could spend the money on a single gun, but would prefer not to. I have looked into factory rifles in the $1,500 - $2,500 range and been impressed with some of the options, but I would like this to be my custom long range rifle.

Cobracutter,
Not that I care, but I am intrigued, how is my post that of a Troll? I simply want to know so that I do not make the mistake again, I am hoping to get feedback from a forum membership that has opinions I respect, so I simply asked the question I would like input on.

Thank you for the introduction to Gradous Rifles. After simply looking over his website and viewing some of his builds I am highly intrigued. I believe that he could help me in my search for a custom built and fit rifle.
