So here I am posting for the first time on SH and I am going to ask a question that will draw much debate and controversy and hopefully some good results.
I am looking to build a long range (1000+ yard) accurate, bolt action rifle and would like the help of the SH members to recommend top of the line (quality, durable, functional) components for this rifle. I have been a seeker of advice from SH forums for many years now but never created a profile because I could find most any answer by searching the forum. I did find a great post on here that listed all the rifle components that were used by competitive shooters and it was very interesting to see what many of them were running as far as caliber and other items but they had very specific competition requirements that they were trying to fill which I am not.
I am simply looking to build a bolt action rifle that will push a round 1000 yard down range accurately and consistently every time so long as the shooter (me) does my part.
For my specifications: I am looking for a caliber that can span the distance and still have enough punch to drop a target (not sure about the rules but let's say a zombie sized target) but not beat up my shoulder if I were to shoot a hundred plus rounds. (I don't know about everyone but I am not "manly" enough to sit behind a 50 cal for 100 rounds at a time other wise the caliber discussion would be over) I am looking for insight into the barrel ( length, twist and manufacturer), stock, base, rings optics even the trigger and bipod that you would recommend.
Now to answer the questions that I can see coming my way, budget lets say up to $50,000 (I would prefer not to spend that obviously, nor do I think I need to in order to accomplish my goal, but if I had to I could so don't hold back because of price, but it has to be justified to spend the $). My shooting experience, I have had Army ABR training spent some time in the sandbox and attended the GPS Sniper School in AZ so I am confident in my ability to shoot a rifle. US vs. sourced components, I always prefer to buy Made in the USA, but if there is a better barrel made somewhere in Europe, or a trigger group that comes from another country I will consider if there is not a comparable part made in the USA. Where am I going to shoot 1000+ yards! I own a fair amount of land that affords me the ability to shoot at ranges over 1000 yards, so on my own private land. My size, I am 6'2" 232lbs with longer arms so I need a stock that can either fit a large frame man or has some adjustability.
That's about all I can think of for questions about me, sorry that my first post on the site is so lengthy. I will keep a tally of the parts I select for the build, how much I spent on each and of course post pictures of my rifle once it is complete.
Thanks in advance for all your input, now let the questions and comments begin...
