HHello all, im making my move to my 1st bolt in a 308 and have a question. im not a expert but not a novice ether, I do like a crisp trigger, lol

My question is, should I get the best rifle I can afford ( Gap, HS HTR )man those rifles are sexy, ) some where in that range OR should I start with something in a lower line?

Im just looking at, Do I buy once or do I buy twice.
I've been loading for my uncle for a little while now and the 7m08 savage he runs is very accurate with 140 nosler as I can shoot better with it than my mini sass.

I think the bolt appeals to me a little better.

Anyway suggestion are welcome

Thanks, God bless America ( and NRA )

Re: Bolt-up

I'd also say if you can afford it, buy it. GAP makes amazing rifles and the gun will outshoot you for a while. You will be able to tell you messed up and the gun didn't.

Re: Bolt-up

if you're not sure what you want (as far as a rifle or the capatilities you want the rifle to have), buy a Remington 700 and a lot of ammo.

if you decide you want a "better" or more comfortable stock, get one. same thing with a trigger. you can always use those parts on a new rifle.

eventually, you will have a very clear idea of what you want and you can send your rifle off or order a new one (and keep shooting the one you have).

Re: Bolt-up

Yup yup good points guys, I. Think a 2nd hand starter Is in order for me as I see some pretty good deals around on top end rifles.

I work in the oilfield and gone alot so my time for working out bugs in a rifle should be limited. ( more time to hone my skill )

I guess this way I KNOW its me and not rifle, hahaa
Most of my range time is on my 45 but I always admired Those long range shooters man. So im gonna try my hand at it.

I have a Leopold- VX-3/ 4.5x14 50 30mm that im going to send to the custom shop and have turrets made as soon as I can work a load up.

I think that should be good for 500 yrds
I was never in the military so mil system is out for me

Now I have to get used to the terminology for these rifles

Thanks to sites like this I can.

Coldboremiracle , killer link , thanks

i'd have the custom shop put a Mil Dot or TMR reticle and M1 knobs on the thing.

Custom knobs only work for a specific load under specific conditions.

Spend a couple bucks and get a Mil Dot Master; it makes learning range estimation very easy.

Shoot the rifle, record your dope, and you're good to go.

If you send the rifle off to a gunsmith, you're scope and your knobs will still be good (not the case with custom knobs).

Re: Bolt-up

Buy / build a "Budget" .308 and get some rounds down range. Play with some other rifles (Like Northlands) and see if you want to get Serious about it. It's hard to "buy Once" if you don't have enough experience to know what you want... You will simply have a big $ rifle built that you may not like, or may not suit your needs.

Action
Stock
Caliber
Optics

The Stock has to fit you and your shooting style. The rest has to fit the type of shooting you will be doing.

LR Hunting ?
Tac Matches ?
Occasional LR shooting on Steel ?
Paper (F Class) ?

Re: Bolt-up

Hello all, hey northland thanks for the offer friend , I just might take you up on that. Im in south america at the moment working but I will hit you up asap when I hit the states.

Well I been looking around and concidered the options and decided to go half way ( not to cheap, not over the top )
I did see that sniper central has a entry level package they offers, Any opinions on this?

What would be some models to conciser? That wouldn't take too much to. upgrade . ( a very good base ) , I've been reading about bedding and truing and all kinds of things being done to your rifles . Would i need this done .would like my rifle to accept a mag.also.

This is what I have sofar,
Cal. 308
Action. Rem 700
Optics . Leupold. (Will replace with mildot red. and mil turrets )going to. Learn mil system

What would be your entry level rifle rig

Again thanks for the input

Re: Bolt-up

My entry level rig is a Remington 700 AAC SD in .308. It out shoots me as is but the stock will be the first replacement item as soon as I feel that it is a limiting factor. My glass is a Millet TRS 4-16X50 Mil/Mil with an SFP illuminated reticle (set for use at 10x). Other than the stock I think that I will be happy for a while. Total package around $1,000 with gun,20 MOA base, rings, scope and bipod.
