Bolts on Remington 700's interchangeable?

I have a Remington 700 PSS that's from the early 90's (with the factory 24" barrel) and a more recent 700 P with a factory 26" barrel. The 26" Remington 700 P has a badger bolt handle installed - can I swap bolts, or is there more to it (eg, gunsmith check it, etc)? How about triggers?

Its all about head spacing. I take this is for a .308 caliber ?
I would get a Go and No Go gauge set for the rifle and if the Go gauge works then your good to go.

Headspace is not the only consideration.......Rem bolt diameters are all pretty close. Make sure it fits properly.

Bolt lugs can be dimensionally different. They should be measured to ensure proper clearance. Bolt nose length and diameter also need to be checked for proper clearances.

check the bolt when it is closed in teh action to ensure the bolt is seaeted on te locking lugs, and not the bolt handle.

If you have the original bolt, you can compare the measured dimensions to see potential issues. Best to have it checked by a competent gunsmith

Checking the headspace is a good idea, but I don't think that the "go" gauge working is the big deal. The big deal is that the bolt NOT close on the "no go" gauge. If the bolt won't close on the "go"gauge, then there is insufficient headspace. If the bolt will close on the "no go" gauge, then there is excessive headspace.

What you want is for the bolt to close on the "go" gauge and not close on the "no go" gauge.

Yes the issue is if the bolt closes on the No Go. Also like stated by rlr you will have to make sure that the lug fit is good to go in the new action, and that it fits with no issues.

I maybe wrong but when you true an action. The bolt is true for that action. Lugs and headspace could be off 2 or 3 thousandths. Dosen't seem like much to me both to a gunsmith its off. I wouldn't try this with a true action.

I could be wrong though.

Yeah, I retrofit an AR charging handle to my Remington 700 and it has a Badger tac latch on it. You should see it.

Thanks for all the comments - sounds like it's a lot more trouble than it's worth. AR's are the Legos of the firearm-world, but no so much with the bolt actions, I suppose. Makes sense.

I guess it's probably less hassle to just have a new bolt knob installed if I am set on the Badger Ord one (yes, already have the bolt-on knobs by KRG - just wanted something a bit more permanent).
