What would you guys say is the best bore slighter out there...there seems to be several different types. The one I have is a laser ark that you put in the chamber just like a round a the dot supposedly goes where the bore is centered. Good for getting on paper but not 100 percent accurate obviously. Should I get a magnetic boresighter that projects a grid or is this a waste of money and just use what I have and make sure I am tight by sending rounds downrange?

Nest question, to ensure my scope crosshairs are vertical is the best way to just take a piece of string and drop it from the ceiling and let gravity do the work? Line vertical line up with the string and your centered right? Even if the building isn't totally level gravity will pull the string down I'd you aim several feet down right? Any other suggestions?

Re: Bore sightseers

I just remove the bolt, set the rifle on bags or a bipod, and look through the bore and align the scope accordingly. That should get you on paper.

A string with a weight will hang vertically. You still need to get the rifle level.

Re: Bore sightseers

Isn't the purpose of bore sighting to get you on paper? I thought all you were doing was making sure you were in line with the bore of the rifle.

Anyway, to answer the question, I prefer the arbor style to the laser. With the exception of having to bore site an AR it works well.

Re: Bore sightseers

You got it....all I wanted to know was that in terms of getting on paper is one type of borsighter better than the other or gets you closer to a.....say 100 yard zero.

Hence, is using a cartridge based boresight just as good as attaching a magnetic one that projects a grid? I don't see any real difference since with eith one all one is doing is ligning up the crossharis with the laser dot or center of grid.

Re: Bore sightseers

I tried something this weekend because I forgot to bore sight my lmt wih a 6x acog before i went to the range.

I put the upper in a sand bag. While looking through the barrel i centered it on my 100 yard target. Once it was centered i adjusted the scope to the center of the target using the windage and elevation knobs. I then put the rifle back together and fired a round. Bam....on paper. 6in high and about the same right.

Always heard of ppl doing this but never tried it. I guess it works. No tools to buy.

Hence the term "bore sighting."

I helped my grand-daughter sight in her .308 on Sunday. Similar to what you described then one round at a clay on the 100yd berm. A few minutes down and a couple left then she went to the paper. Three on paper, a little tweak and the next three were on the money. She made hits on steel to 300yds her first time out with the 308. 12yrs old and well on her way...

That's how it was done back before folks had "boresighters" to spend their cash on. I've used the light switch on the wall and a spot of snow on the mountain side for a boresight. When I get to the field, I'll send one at a rock or spot on the bern and make my first adjustment prior to going to the paper. Old and cheap, that's me.
