Gunsmithing Bottom metal that uses aics mags

Re: Bottom metal that uses aics mags

Im not aware of one that is made from steel.
Badger, Surgeon, CDI, those are all aluminum. Not sure about any others.
Id be interested in a steel one too.

And something Ive been wanting to say...

Bottom metals that take DBMs are often referred to as "DBMs" themselves. But its not, its a bottom metal.
A DBM is a Detachable Box Magazine.

You're looking for a Steel Bottom metal that takes DBMs.

I know it has become the accepted lingo. Like calling most rifles here "Custom".
But its not exactly proper terminology IMO

. Although it is accepted now and everyone knows what it means.

I know Im being overly picky. And I know DBM is short for DBM bottom metal.
Just being picky/bitchy.

Re: Bottom metal that uses aics mags

The bottom metal isn't detachable though. The box magazine is.
I know what people mean when they say it I just felt like being anal and throwin that out there.

I agree aluminum is strong enough, but hell steel wouldn't be a bad way to go if weight was not a concern. Especially for the latch arm.

My guess is a Steel bottom metal that takes a DBM would be very expensive due to the extra machine time it would take to make.

Aluminum can be machined effortlessly. Steel would be a different story, especially certain grades of SS.

Re: Bottom metal that uses aics mags

But that won't stop somebody from buying it if somebody makes it. I've seen bases made from alumimium, steel, and even titanium. If someone makes it, there will likely be someone available to buy it.

By this logic, isn't any magazine in the world a DBM? Because if it is a box magazine, it is also by design detachable from the firearm...

However you want to use the acronym, it seems that it has a fairly universal and understood definition, so not sure why this is is an issue to you?

Just seems that you like to argue though, whether it makes any logical sense or not

Re: Bottom metal that uses aics mags

I thought DBM was Detachable Bottom Metal as shortened from detachable magazine bottom metal. Magazines themselves referred to as DM or Detachable Magazines.

^^^ From CDI website. Seekins site also lists as Detachable Bottom Metal.

Re: Bottom metal that uses aics mags

I would like steel because I plan on modifying it to begin with. I was looking at metal for a rem 700 because it is the closest fit I have found.
I am putting together a custom Weatherby TRR in 300WM. And thought it would be nice to have a detachable mag. Stainless and carbon I can weld on and then heat treat to regain some of it's strength, aluminum I don't feel as comfortable with trying to modify. I just don't have the skills.

Yaa maybe

The bottom metal isn't any more detachable than any other bottom metal. Detachable bottom metal doesn't make sense unless its short for detachable box mag bottom metal.

The Box magazine is what is detachable...

Hence the term, Detachable Box Magazine.

Ok I'll stop.

I saw lumleyarms and sent them an email. They have not yet started on any long action metal yet. But I think if it works as good as it looks they are on to something.
