I bought a custom rifle at a pawn shop yesterday and I dont really know anything about it. Im looking for any information I can get. I know its a Mauser action but I dont even know what model it is. I believe its a 98 but Im just not sure. The caliber is another story as well. I found dies for a .270 akley improved but the magnum is whats throwing me. Please help. Thankshttp://s920.photobucket.com/albums/ad41/shaggy773/guns/?action=view&current=photo1.jpg

How much was this thing? Usually I would like to know what I am buying before laying down money. Maybe I am just odd like that.

LOL I bought an old benchrest gun at a show a few years ago. I took it to the gunsmith at gander mountain on the way home to ask how much for a chamber cast. His reply " I think I can do it" WTF?? This is the house gunsmith? I did it myself. Not hard to do, look up the stuff in the midway catalog.

From the picture that Deadly posted your action has Belgian proofmarks.

I can Identify two:

The far right one is from the Perron proof house, and is an inspector mark and view stamp.

The next is a Nitro Proof (PV) for rifled barrels, also the Perron proof house.

Without seeing more pictures I would conclude this is a FN action, made in Beligum, not a Mauser 98.

The FN supremes were very good actions, mostly made in the 50's and 60's.

I really appreciate it. I did post another link to photobucket where i have several more photos. Is there anything you can tell me about the barrel and caliber?

Re: bought a rifle at a pawn shop, help???

shaggy,

The gun was a put together by Flaig's out of Millvale, PA. They had a large gun building business in the 1960's to 1980's or so. I cannot remember whom they got their barrels from.

In looking at your pictures your action is a FN Supreme model 400 action. This is a very good action, and not a military retread. The Browning Safari Grade long actions were built in the 60's and early 70's were built on FN Supreme's.

There were a number of improved 270's around back when. Hard to say what yours is.

The best and safest way to determine the caliber will be to make a chamber cast with Cerrosafe. You can order this from Brownell's and Midway and directions are included. The stuff is reusable and every hobby gunsmith should have some in their toolbox. Make a cast and measure the dimensions and it will be much easier and safer to proceed from there.

From P.O. Ackley's Handbook:

"There are numerous versions of .270 Magnums designed and introduced ..... Cases are made by necking and shortening .300 H&H Magnum brass ....."

In other words, its a Cerrosafe moment as stated above.

I'd be curious to see what the throat looks like on this rifle. Sounds like it's a Screamin' round and given it's age may have no throat left at all. You may want to have it checked unless you already did.

That's the problem with buying at Pawn Shops. Unless you really know what to look for I don't recommend buying Hi-Power rifles from them. Generally they have no idea about things like throat erosion. In my younger years I got bit by a Pawn Shop on a 220 Swift. It was a smooth-bore for the first 6" or so! FWIW...

Re: bought a rifle at a pawn shop, help???

My dad bought an old sporterized Mauser in a Pawn shop about a year ago in 8mm Gibbs. Turned out that dies for the Gibbs cost more to get than a new 35 Whelean barrel from Shilen and what the smith charges to install so they are at his shop now. lol. You might look into that.

Interesting indeed.

Cast the chamber, verify what it actually is and buy some dies.

Looks like alot of fun but then again im curious about unusual stuff like this.

Looks like its in nice condition

Bob, I really appreciate the info. Would you know somewhere I can buy hard to find ammo, brass or reloading dies once I find out what this caliber is. Thanks

This. After you make a chamber cast, all will become clear.
