I was trying to research the caliber, but it’s hard to research it when you don’t even know what it is called. Anyway it’s just a shortened. 223 case so you can load long and still have it fit in a magazine? I want to run a 75-90 grain at moderate speeds for longer barrel life. Like 2500-2800 fps? Or am I just retarded... I do high round count strings on dog towns and was thinking of a light weight .22 with a proof CF barrel but I want 3000 plus rds out of the tube before it burns out the throat...

.22 TCM if you want to go full retard
I don’t necessarily want to go full retard, LOL. I was thinking of shooting 75 to 90 grain at a slower speed just for the sake of barrel life. Maybe I will just stick to plain Jane .223 but I want it to be able to mag feed as well. So my theory is if I could shoot a 75 grain or 80 grain at around 27 to 2800 ft./s I would have a much longer barrel life in theory, if I could get 4000 rounds or better, I would buy a proof carbon fiber barrel. I don’t want to buy a proof carbon fiber barrel if it’s just going to burn out in 2 to 3000 rounds. I shoot dog towns and can blast 100-200 rds in a day easy.

So I was thinking there was a .223 Bolt faced short cased round like a ppc looking thing... you know...where I could run a 75-80g super efficiently at or under 2700fps/61,000 psi..... all in favor of barrel life vs. accuracy... ranges would be 200-700yds ish.... or am I way overthinking this....

Would a .223 AI with a 75g projectile be a barrel burner? Could I just run slower powders? Like magnum powders?

Either.223 AI or jump up to a larger bolt face. (.22-250 with custom 1:8/7 twist, .224 Valkyrie, .22 BR, etc.)
    Great write up here: http://www.6mmbr.com/223Rem.html
Or stick with .223 Rem because components and barrels are cheap and plentiful.
Small bore, heavy bullets, with any decent velocity tend to be barrel burners and often more finicky to load for.

I actually read that earlier today.... thanks though! Great information. I might just do a 1:7 .223AI and be done with it... lol.

Or this would be interesting, how about 222R AI, lol. That long neck ought to keep the throat in good shape and about 21 grains of slowish burn rate powder for the size of the case, should be easy on the barrel.

Also 222 Remington was the old standby benchrest cartridge before PPC came along, it held the smallest 100Y group for decades.

You could be a trail Blazer for us!

I so want to try it. I’ve read reports of over 10k round barrels that still agg <1/4”. I just haven’t found data for 75 gr+ projectiles and a triple deuce. Could be the ultimate practice round if AR-15 mag length is a requirement. Might even be fur friendly on the fox and cats.

Now I'm wondering what kind of performance you can get out of a 6-221 fireball or a fast twist 221 fireball shooting heavies.... Either might be a slick AR-15 cartridge and Lapua makes 221 brass...

Probably not worth the hassle given 6AR, 224 valkyrie etc.. but still kind of got my gears spinning for the moment.

Exactly... a 8-12k barrel life .22 heavy? Can you say 30rd strings on a dog town without burning out your throat?
