brakes and snow

Again today the Steyr crew got out to shoot. This was supposed to be part of a practical rifle practice but near most of the Club couldn't make it due to the extreme weather.

We slung lead at 600yds and it was interesting to observe the significant difference muzzle brake/no muzzle brake made?

The braked 04A1 certainly left no immediate ground signature whilst the P2 would certainly have advertised its presence on the first shot!

Snow depth was only 2-3" no more.

at first i thought it was a winter driving lesson

nice comparison picture, same can be applied to dusty / dirt environments.

snow is a little different as you can't pour water or oil in front of the muzzle as that would discolor it too, all that is left is the white sheet - and even that'll show some powder residue in many cases.

I wore some snow the other day

I finally shoveled a path in front of the rifle to keep the powder from flying on me.

I carry a hessian standard issue sandbag,..it provides grip for the harris bipod feet or laid out works in mud/dust to cancel signature. Its a simple fix but I will put an EBI brake on the P2 before Xmas.

What type of brake is on the 04A1? A radial brake such as on my MLR blows a lot of debris when shot on dry ground. I haven't shot it in the snow yet, but I would imagine it'll leave quite a signature in the snow.

Its the standard Steyr brake as found on the 04/04a1 and the 08

Certainly reduces felt recoil and isn't too anti social on the firing line for other users!
