i bought a brand new complete upper and lower from a very well known company (i don't want to say in case this is not a problem). i knew it had a average barrel on it but my plan was to swap it out with a bartlein barrel i had recently picked up. so i got the rifle today and like always when i get a new rifle i look it over and run my lyman borescope down it to look for any problems. the weird thing is,,,,,,,the lands start right at the neck, there is no freebore. so i look in the new bartlien ar10 barrel and after the neck, there is a freebore (smooth,,no lands at all), then the lands "start" ramping up in what i would call the leade and then they are just regular lands like normal. but even the bartlein looks a little odd to me so i get out my bartlein 2b in my 6.5 saum gap built hunter. once again, there is what i call a freebore right after the neck, it is smooth, no lands for a bit (.081 in the gap), then the leade starts ramping up. hmmm, so i pull out my ruger rpr in 6.5 cm, it also has a smooth freebore, pretty long one it seems and then the lands start ramping up. i go look again at the new, unfired barrel that came with the ar10, look really close and it appears to have no freebore, the lands seem to start ramping up right at the neck.
just in case i am off in my terminology, i consider the whole distance from where the neck ends and where the lands are fully ramped up to be the throat,, and the freebore is the first part of it where it is smooth (there are no lands) and the leade is where the lands start to emerge at the end of the freebore and ramp up to normal height. i suppose others probably think differently maybe but,,,,,,
so i remove the firing pin and put a round of prime ammo in it and the bolt seems to close.
i put black sharpie all over the bullet and re rack it, pull it out and i don't see anything glaring but i am not a gunsmith. i suppose i could use my hornady headspace tool, but my eyes are already telling me there is a problem.
am i overreacting?
should the lands start right where the neck ends? i dont want to call the company and feel like an idiot.
i could take some pictures if what i am describing doesn't make sense. the camera in the borescope isn't the greatest but
