I'm going to be loading for a new 300WM build shortly.I generally use Lapua brass in everything except my gas guns ( they beat it up too bad) but I see Lapua no longer makes it.I was considering Hornady but I don't have much experience with it.What would you guys recommend as far as consistancy and life?

Re: Brass for 300 Win Mag?

I've used Win, Rem, and Nosler brass in mine. I've gotten really good batches of each and really bad batches of each. Sadly, buying american made brass is kind of like playing the lottery these days.

My last batch of WW was horrible, over 50%culls. My last batch of Nosler was very good. That's what I am currently using with excellent results. They are on their 4th loading with minimal signs of wear, and the primer pockets are still nice and tight.

Previous batches of "good" WW brass gave me 7-8 loadings before the pockets were too loose to use.

I think I might try Norma next, and see if the reputation is warranted.

i was lucky to get 2 reloads using once fired (in my chamber) federal match brass before i had case head separation. i believe i have some winchester with close to 10 firings and i see no reason they won't keep going. i neck size only and they still feed and eject perfectly.

Well, we have another "let's agonize over what's best" thread and, again, the definitive answer appears to be ... 'everything'! Goodness, sometimes it's enough to make a feller wonder if it really makes much difference!

Sometimes it works out like this, but overall I'm glad for the input at least it gives me some ideas.Think I'm going to try Hornady as I've yet to hear much negative.I wish Lapua still made it also......wonder why they stopped?

Because obviously 300WM is an unpopular round that no one shoots any more.

They do make 300WSM though.... go figure.

I phoned them.
They told me Winchester made the brass for both Black Hills .308 and .300WinMag.
I don't remember/know if it was primed by Winchester or not.

After reading this I had to do some research and I can't find anyplace that has Lapua .300 WSM brass. Pretty sure they don't make it. Forgive me if I'm wrong.

Huh... you're right. I could've sworn I saw Lapua 300WSM brass for sale. Oh well. Just goes to show you can't believe everything you read on the internet.

Thanks for the flame free correction.

Re: Brass for 300 Win Mag?

I've been running winchester brass and, it's ok but, you have to do ALL the brass prep on it. They have to be neck turned and deburred etc.

I think most brass will work but, it has to do more with the effort you put into it for it to be consistant.

I only bump the sholder about .002 inches when I resize my cassings. I tried .001 but it did not seem to be enough. I am on reload number three for some of the cassings the rest are on reload 2. I am only using 150 of them at a time. They were all 1X fired cassings from my friends 300WM who does not reload. So they have been fired 3 or 4 times bepending on the box.

When I first started reloading back in the day I just smashed the cassing into the die and made the die make the casing as small as it could and I suffered many case head seperations. Now I am a little smarter just a little.
