brass prep upgrade question

I'm looking to upgrade my brass prep situation and was wondering which way to go. I'm looking at either picking up a RCBS trim mate case prep center or getting a three way cutter for my case trimmer. Has anyone used the three way cutters and if so what are your thoughts on them? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: brass prep upgrade question

I put off getting the case prep center for a long time... once I did, and started using it, I thought to my self... why did I wait so long?!?

The case prep center has five stations, so other tools like a flash-hole deburring tool and a primer-pocket uniformer can be installed, or a brush (for cleaning the insides of necks). Ironically, I think that Lyman tool heads work way better (and cost considerably less) than the hinky crap that RCBS sells for this machine. My next order from Midway is going to have one of their hand deburring tools and primer pocket uniformers to replace the RCBS ones; I already put a Lyman VLD chamfering bit and flash-hole deburring bit on it.

YMMV,

Re: brass prep upgrade question

The people I know that use a case prep center seem to be pleased with them once they get the accessories to their liking. The three way cutter preforms the case mouth prep all at once when it trims the case. I guess I was curious if it was worth getting instead of the prep center. It would seem that there isn't the option of a VLD type chamfering with the three way cutter. Perhaps I'm just over thinking this and should just stick with the prep center. Thanks for your input.

Re: brass prep upgrade question

The Case prep center has paid for itself in short time for me. I have no experience with the 3 way cutters. As most of my bulk prep work is done on a Dillon with the trimmer. My match ammo is done slowly with hand tools.

Re: brass prep upgrade question

what sort of chamfer angle are you guys with the 3 way cutters getting? Is more like the standard RCBS chamfering tool than the VLD style? Is it adjustable? Seems like the 3 way cutter would be pretty consistent compared to doing it manually or on the case prep station.

Re: brass prep upgrade question

One thing I noticed about that Forster 3-in-1 after I posted above is that it only comes in three calibers - .224, .243, .308. If you shoot a 6.5, 7mm, or .338... outaluck.

Re: brass prep upgrade question

vld chamfer - chuck up in a drill
debur - chuck up in a drill
primer p uniformer - chuck up in a drill

everything - chuck up in a drill

RCBS trimboy - waste o $$

Re: brass prep upgrade question

To each their own. I used cordless drills with separate tools for each step for years. Tried using the drill press, just didn't feel right. The Case Prep center... works for me on those calibers I don't have setup for the Giraud.
