I have a set of about 400 pieces of LC brass that just will not cooperate with me (6th loading). I just had my gun rebarreled with a match chamber. the old barrel was about as worn out as it can get. I managed to get a case stuck in my die, but it did come out after a little work. the die is still shiney in side, and i am using Lyman's spray lube. I have never had a problem with this brass at all ever. the case will go into the die about 2/3 to 3/4 the way in smoothly and all of a sudden make a popping sound like friction is occuring. I have checked to make sure there is plenty of lube on the case, and the die is clean. Could i have too much lube? or is the brass work hardened too much to use any more?

Re: brass question

For spray lube, you need to wait a few minutes for the carrier to evaporate. I use Frankford Arsenal spray lube but only on smaller cases like the 223/5.56. I'm not familiair with the Lyman lube having never used it.

For the smaller cases I dump a bunch in a plastic tub and spray them sparingly and mix them around and spray again... wait 5-10 minutes for carrier evaporation and begin. The cases will feel kind of tacky instead of wet.
For bigger cases such as 308 I use Imperial sizing lube. This is on an old Rockchucker if that matters. It's more "trouble" but I've not had a stuck case in a long time.

You might try some Imperial sizing lube and see if theres a difference. A little goes a long way, and a single can lasts a long time. Its good stuff.

Re: brass question

i will give that a try...I don't think i said it, but with several other brass types i have not had a single issue. it all went right in then right out. and the weird thing is that the last reloading on this brass was right in right out.

According to the can it says spray, and let stand for 30 seconds. but i will try letting it sit for longer.

thanks for the advice

Re: brass question

Imperial sizing die lube.

Chamber check those resized cases. I have had and also observed numerous instances where old brass fired in a looser chamber will not chamber in a tighter match chamber, even after FL resizing. The sizing die cannot resize down to far enough and the area right around the casehead remains too large for the match chamber. Not something you want to discover in a middle of a match stage.

Re: brass question

SMALL BASE SIZING DIE and good lube (Imperial or a coating of something like Dillon or lanolin-based).

Shoot a case in a fat or military reamer chamber and it won't fit your new/fancy tighter match chamber -- just ain't gonna happen.

Re: brass question

that is exactly the issue that i have run into. how ever i did try dammital's tip and it worked great. i did how ever manage to stick a case in my die, and i tapped the case head and jacked it out with a 1/4x20tpi screw. I also have fit checked those cases to my chamber, and its one of those things of barely fit. its a really tight chamber. thanks for all the help guys

Re: brass question

I started using a piece of military sleeping matt cut to fit into a cookie sheet. I can get about 120 7.62x51 cases at time onto it. But I use old fashioned lubes like RCBS or Forster case lube that requires me to roll cases on a matt.

By using the cookie sheet, I can dump a great many cases onto the matt without having to line them all up. To get all 120 cases on the matt, I do have to line them up though...four rows of 30 cases each.

It may be time to set this brass aside. You just sprung for a match grade barrel and chambering job so why not give it some fresh brass that will fireform to the new chamber?
