I have been reloading for about 2 years and now that I feel I am getting a better understand for things I thought I would throw out the question as to how many neck size brass only ?

#1 - how many firings would I get on my .308 before I have to full length resize and what would Necessitate a full length size ?

#2 - for those who like to neck size , what is the preferred neck tension and for what reason ?

Thanks

Kyle

<span style="font-style: italic">"have been reloading for about 2 years and now that I feel I am question as to how many neck size brass only ?"</span>

Virtually no one.

<span style="font-style: italic">"#1 - how many firings would I get on my .308 before I have to full length resize..."</span>

Varies quite a bit.

<span style="font-style: italic">"..and what would Necessitate a full length size ?"</span>

Difficult chambering.

<span style="font-style: italic">"#2 - for those who like to neck size, what is the preferred neck tension.."</span>

Varies. I prefer what shoots best.

<span style="font-style: italic">"...and for what reason ?"</span>

Slightly improved accuracy.

Re: Brass sizing question

I have two bolt guns that I neck size only for and they seem to do great according to my scores....neck size twice then full length for me...Never say never and it could and I'm probably will bite me in the ass one day when a round wont chamber....

Re: Brass sizing question

I neck size with a Lee collet die & shoulder bump after 3 firings. Neck sizing only works the brass much less then doing a FLS after every firing. Works for 308, 223, & 260 Rem.

Neck sizing reduces the neck diameter so it will hold the bullet. Otherwise the bullets can literally fall out of the case.

Re: Brass sizing question

I reload mostly for hunting and full length almost everything. I started neck sizing and turning to gain a little more accuracy out of my custom gun. If your hunting and don't want to worry about a round getting stuck when that big buck steps out full length is the way I go. If your trying to shoot the nuts off a gnat at a 1000 yards do everything you can do to keep your loads as consistent as possible. Weigh each brass, bullet and powder charge. Turn necks. Use bushing dies to control neck tension. Check concentricity. There is no end. Gotta love it.

Re: Brass sizing question

You might get you one of the match shell gauges from Brownells. Made in .308 and .223. Drop it in, if it goes all the way, you are good to go. Beats running every shell through your chamber before a match or going hunting. Store-bought confidence, about 30 bucks.

Re: Brass sizing question

For my bolt and single shot rifles I primarily neck size then use a body die to full length size when necessary. How often you have to FL size depends on many factors and you will need to determine through experimentation. Generally I will shoot for .001 and .002 of neck tension. Annealing brass will provide much more consistent results. Also when sizing with bushing dies I do not use the expander except for brass that was fired through a gas gun
